What if there are more than two choices?

WESTMINSTER — I couldn't disagree more with your editorial on Peter Shumlin's State of the State message. It's sad to see The Commons, a model of innovation in media, standing up for the same old way of thinking.

Yes, a proper caution must be exercised, and we'll need to intelligently review what went right and what may cause problems later. But I find it inspiring that we repaired roads and bridges at a third the projected price. Can we do that elsewhere in government and other systems? We advocates of single-payer health care have been saying so for years.

Irene, and our response to it, is a challenge to Vermonters. Can we get past these sterile public arguments that we've been having for years? Cut taxes, or support education. Cut human services, or raise taxes on the rich.

What if we actually have more than two choices? It sure looks like we do. I'd want to see it proven otherwise before I stood up for the status quo.
