Windham County plans activities for annual Green Up Day

Green Up Day 2012 will take place on Saturday, May 5.

Vermont was the first state to designate a special day for cleaning up the entire state, 41 years ago in 1970. Anyone can help. Residents can arrange a group or just show up at one of the Windham County locations below. There they can pick up bags, check in, and have a complimentary coffee and doughnut, or even breakfast. Participants are encouraged to wear bright colors, sturdy shoes, and gloves.

Athens: Lynn Morgan, 802-869-2227, meet at Town Hall parking lot, 10 a.m.

Brattleboro: Helene Henry, 802-254-6983, Brattleboro Conservation Commission; Stewart McDermet, 802-254-3555; Sheila Young, Brattleboro Subaru, 802-251-1000.

Green Up locations:

• Elliot Street Cafe, Corner of Elm and Elliot street. 8 a.m. to noon.

• Brattleboro Union High School, Jim Kiehle, 451-3488, 8 a.m. to noon.

• Brattleboro Subaru, Putney Road, 8 a.m. to noon, coffee and doughnuts, cookout at noon for workers.

• West Brattleboro, Nancy Barber, 802-246-0851, meet on green in front of fire station at 8 a.m.

Refreshments for volunteers at all sites.

Brookline: Lynn Reinhardt, 802-365-4710, meet at 9 a.m. at Town Office.

Dover: Green Up is May 12. Lori O'Hern, 802-348-7810. Meet at Dover School at 9 a.m. for bags and road assignments. Lunch for volunteers at 11:30 at the school, with a trash sculpture contest after lunch. The garden club will also have a plant sale.

Dummerston: Mark Brown, 802-258-0382. Meet at 9 a.m. at Dummerston Congregation Church in Dummerston Center. Bring picnic lunch to eat on the Common.

Guilford: Elly Majonen, 802-257-4067, Broad Brook Grange, 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., bags available. Full bags may be brought to Grange until 5 p.m. Separate tires and metal from garbage. Refreshments all day. Treats to share are welcome.

Grafton: Bob Wright, 802-843-2386, meet at 9 a.m., Grafton Town Shed. Ice cream at noon for workers returning with full bags. Dumpster at Town Garage all day Monday, May 7.

Halifax: Tara Lee Lane, 802-368-7303 or itlane@myfairpoint.net. Meet at 10 a.m. at the school. Bring full bags back at noon. Refreshments for workers, with a bake sale at Community Hall. Volunteers needed to take photos of rivers, downed trees, and debris from Irene for town Riverwalk Survey.

Newfane: Laura Bacon, 802-348-7891, Nissa Petrak, 802-348-6301. Bags available at Newfane General Store and Town Office during week before Green Up Day. Leave full bags visible on roadsides for pick up Monday morning.

Putney: Dan Toomey, 802-387-5402 or dtoomey@landmark.edu. A Putney Town truck will be parked at usual spot next to Town Hall, 8 a.m. Bags available there all day. Take only number of bags needed. Full bags go in back of truck.

Bellows Falls/Rockingham: Ed Dinanny, 802-869-2397. Meet at 9 a.m., Bellows Falls Union High School. Pizza at Athens Pizza at noon for volunteers. Call Dinanny for bags needed in particular areas.

Stratton: Pat and Steve Noonan, 802-896-6506. Bags available now at Town Office during business hours. Breakfast, 8 to 9 a.m., Town Hall on Green Up Day. Get bags and road routes then.

Townshend: Heide Russ, 802-365-4712, Carly Sanderson, 802-874-7162. Bags available at Town Clerk and Elementary School week before and 9 a.m. to noon on Green Up Day. Transfer station open until 3 p.m. for full bags.

Vernon: Faith Jobin, 802-258-1623, 9 a.m. Meet at Recreation Center. Water bottles and granola bars for workers. Pizza at noon for workers.

Wardsboro: John Densmore, 802-896-6178 or johnden@sover.net. Meet at 8 a.m., Town Office. Homemade doughnuts, coffee, cider, fruit for volunteers.

Westminster: Ginger Cook, 802-463-4991 (work phone). Bags available at Town Hall, Westminster Institute, and Westminster West Library week before. Leave large items on roadside with Green Up bag attached for pickup Monday.

Whitingham: Aysha and Todd Wahlstrom, 802-368-2807. Meet 9:30 a.m., Town Hill Pottery. Coffee and homemade doughnuts from Jacksonville General Store. Lunch by Lions Club.

Wilmington: Held its Green Up Day on April 28.

Windham: Marcia Clinton, 802-875-3531. Meet at 9 a.m. at Town Office. Lunch at Meeting House at noon. Awards ceremony after lunch.
