Local swimmer Emma Davis wins three gold medals at Special Olympics

BRATTLEBORO — Emma Davis, 17, of Brattleboro, took three gold medals in swimming at this year's Special Olympics held recently at the University of Vermont.

One of three swimmers in the 100-meter individual medley (all four competitive strokes: butterfly, backstroke, breaststroke, and freestyle), Davis gained the gold.

She was the only swimmer doing the breaststroke, so she netted the gold again for her competitive performance.

She swam the challenging 50-meter butterfly and again gained gold after the other swimmers were disqualified. But Davis was in the lead from the start, said her long-time swim coach, Vernon resident Beverly Current.

“She received many compliments,” Current said, “on her beautiful strokes, her style and skill, as well as on her positive etiquette.”

Current added that Davis's “wild bathing suit ensemble” also garnered positive responses.

This is Davis's third Special Olympics competition and her most successful, although she also earned medals in the first two.

Current said Davis was the only competitor for the entire games from Windham County. And, she added, the swim team, when there is one, has been dubbed the “Windham Waves.”

Davis is a freshman at Brattleboro Union High School.
