Medicine for the People starts up low-cost clinic

PUTNEY - Wednesday, Nov. 14, marks the return of the monthly low-cost clinics at Medicine for the People, 125 Main St.

From 4-7 pm, people may come to the community clinic and pay by donation for half-hour sessions. Various kinds of fully clothed massage - such as shiatsu, acupressure, Thai and Swedish - and Japanese- and Chinese-style acupuncture will be available. Tables will be set up in the classroom space and practitoners will move freely in this communal setting.

BF Farmers' Market begins winter season

BELLOWS FALLS - The Bellows Falls Farmers' Market is extending its regular season with a series of winter markets.

On Friday, Nov. 16, they will hold its first winter market of the season. The market will be held indoors at the Train Station from 4-7 p.m.. The market will run from November through March the third Friday of each month. Markets are planned for Dec. 21, Jan. 18, Feb. 15 and March 15.

There are several new vendors to the market. Blake Hill Preserves of Grafton, Sawyers Artisanal Cheese of Walpole, N.H., and Wicks and Stones. These vendors will join market regulars such as Harlow Farm, Orchard Hill Breadworks, Guerilla Grown Produce, AlpineGlo Farm, local jewelry artist Tristan Wandzy, jams and jellies by Pumpkin Seeds, Grace and Miss Mouse Soaps, and Sowing Peace Farm.

Centre Church presents craft fair

BRATTLEBORO - Centre Congregational Church, 193 Main St., will host a Holiday Craft Fair on Saturday, Nov. 17, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The public is invited.

Craft items will be on display and/or for sale, including paintings, collages, photos, quilts, doll clothes, note cards and much more. Children will have gingerbread cookies to decorate and live music will be provided by Fred Lucies. Light refreshments will be available. Historic Brookline Church to hold craft fair, quilt raffle

BROOKLINE - The Brookline Ladies Benevolence Society's annual Holiday Bazaar will be held at the Historic Brookline Church on Saturday, Nov. 17, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Unique handmade holiday gifts and ornaments, homemade baked goods, coffee, hot and cold cider and homemade doughnuts will be available for purchase. The raffle drawing for the ever-popular 2012 edition of the queen sized, handmade, “Moonlight in Vermont” quilt will take place at 1 p.m. Tickets will be available for purchase until the drawing.

All proceeds to benefit the ongoing restoration and preservation of the Historic Brookline Church.

Osher Institute holds makeup lecture

DUMMERSTON-On Monday, Nov. 19, the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) will hold a make-up lecture in this fall's six-week series of lectures on on the human body.

Bob Engel will present what was to have been the last lecture in the series, on the neuroendocrine system and the metaphysics of the human machine. This lecture, which runs from 1 to 3 p.m., makes up for the fourth scheduled lecture, which was canceled due to Hurricane Sandy. His lecture will take place at the Southeast Vermont Learning Collaborative, 471 Vermont Route 5. Parking and handicapped access are available. Light refreshments are served at all lectures.

Surgeons discuss joint replacement options in series of talks

BRATTLEBORO - Southern Vermont Orthopaedics and Sports Medicine will present a three-part discussion series entitled, “A Joint Effort: Conversations about Orthopaedic Surgery and Integrated Care.”

During each presentation, the audience will hear about advances in joint replacement techniques from orthopaedic surgeons and patients who have undergone the procedures and post-operative rehabilitation to regain an active and healthy lifestyle free from joint pain.

On Tuesday, Nov. 27, William Vranos, MD, will discuss the new anterior hip replacement surgery technique that may be less painful and result in faster recovery times for some patients.

Elizabeth McLarney, MD, will address treatment options for shoulder pain and arthritis issues on Wednesday, Dec. 6.

Jonathan Thatcher, MD, closes out the series on Thursday, Dec. 12, with a discussion about the pros and cons of partial knee replacement and total knee replacement surgeries for patients with knee pain or knee arthritis.

Winston Prouty Center begins new preschool curriculum

BRATTLEBORO - The Early Learning Center Preschool Staff at the Winston Prouty Center for Child Development have begun training in Tools of the Mind, a research and play-based curriculum. They were joined in this training by local collaborators Windham Southeast Supervisory Union's Essential Early Education program and Putney Preschool.

Prouty's two preschool classrooms are gradually implementing the curriculum, which is designed as a two-year process.
