Green Up Day schedule listed for county towns

State-designated day for cleanup is Saturday, May 4

Green Up Day 2013 is Saturday, May 4. Vermont was the first state to designate a special day for cleaning up the entire state, 43 years ago in 1970.

Anyone can help. Arrange a group or just show up at one of the Windham County locations below. Pick up bags, sign in your area of clean up, and have a complimentary coffee and doughnuts or even breakfast. For safety, wear bright colors, sturdy shoes, and gloves.

Brattleboro

• Brattleboro Subaru, Putney Road, Marie Flack, 802-251-1000. 8 a.m. to noon, coffee and doughnuts, cookout at noon for workers.

• West Brattleboro, Nancy Barber, 802-246-0851, meet on green in front of Fire Station at 8 a.m. Refreshments from 8 a.m. to noon.

Athens: Lynn Morgan, 802-869-2227, meet at Town Hall parking lot at 10 a.m.

Brookline: Lynn Reinhardt, 802-365-4710, meet at 9 a.m. at Town Office.

Dover: Lori O'Hern, 802-348-7810, meet at 9 a.m. for bags and road assignments at Dover School. Lunch at the school 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Trash sculpture contest after lunch.

Dummerston: Mark Brown, 802-258-0832, meet at 9 a.m., Dummerston Center Church. Bring picnic lunch to eat on the Common.

Guilford: Elly Majonen, 802-257-4067, Broad Brook Grange, 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.; bags available. Full bags may be brought to Grange until 5 p.m. Please separate tires and metal from garbage. Refreshments all day. Treats to share are welcome.

Grafton: Larry Middleton, 802-843-7333, meet at 9 a.m., Grafton Town Shed. Ice cream at noon for workers returning with full bags. Dumpster at Town Garage all day Monday, May 6.

Halifax: Tara Lee Lane, 802-368-7303 or jtlane@myfairpoint.net, meet at 10 a.m., at the school. Refreshments at noon by Halifax Parent/Teacher Group. Bags available at Town Hall.

Jamaica: Pat Muelmans, 802-874-4681 or jamaicatownclerk@svcable.net. Meet at Jamaica School at 9 a.m. for bags and road assignments. Bags available at Town Office.

Londonderry: Esther Fishman, 802-824-3306, or Maureen Cronix, 802-824-3782. Bags available at Clarks IGA, Peoples' United Bank, Town Office, and the transfer station. Town trucks will be parked at the Depot building in South Londonderry, the Mill parking lot in Londonderry, and the transfer station to receive full bags.

Putney: Dan Toomey, 802-387-5402. A Putney Town truck will be parked at the usual spot next to Town Hall, 8 a.m. Bags available there all day. Take only number of bags needed. Full bags go in back of truck.

Bellows Falls/Rockingham: Ed Dinanny, 802-869-2397. Meet at 9 a.m., Bellows Falls Union High School. Pizza at Athens Pizza at noon for volunteers. Call Dinanny for bags needed in particular areas.

Stratton: Sherry Nowicki, 802-896-3437. 7:30 to 10:30 a.m. at Town Hall to pick up bags, road routes. Refreshments served.

Townshend: Heide Russ, 802-365-4712. Bags available with town clerk and at the elementary school the week before, and 9 a.m. to noon on Green Up Day. Dump open until 3 p.m. for full bags.

Vernon: Faith Jobin, 802-258-1623. 9 a.m. Meet at Recreation Center. Water bottles and granola bars for workers. Pizza at noon for workers.

Wardsboro: John Densmore, 802-896-6178, meet at the Town Office at 8 a.m. Homemade doughnuts, coffee, cider, and fruit for volunteers.

Westminster: Ginger Cook, 802-463-4991 (work phone). Bags available at Town Hall and Westminster West Library. Leave large items on roadside with Green Up bag attached for pickup Monday.

Whitingham: Aysha and Todd Wahlstrom, 802-368-2807. Meet at 9:30 a.m. at Towne Hill Pottery. Coffee and homemade doughnuts from Jacksonville Store. Lunch by Lions Club.

Wilmington: Kathy Larsen, 802-464-2017; Rebecca Sweeney, 802-464-2017. Meet at Buzzy Towne Park from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. to get bags and route assignments. Hot dogs and soda at noon at Twin Valley High School.

Windham: Marcia Clinton, 802-875-3531. Meet at 9 a.m. at Town Office. Lunch at Meeting House at noon. Awards ceremony after lunch.
