BRATTLEBORO — “French around the world: une journée de la Francophonie” will take place at the River Garden in downtown Brattleboro on Saturday, April 27.
La Francophonie refers to the conglomeration of countries, principalities, islands and other places where French is spoken. French is the official language in many countries; in others it is simply commonly spoken. La Francophonie encompasses a varied and intriguing mix of cultures, music, and foods based on a common language.
The event is sponsored by The Grammar School in Putney and the American Association of Teachers of French of Western Massachusetts and Vermont.
Organizers say the celebration will give people the opportunity to explore the many cultures linked by the French language, speak the language, discuss their ancestry, or just share their appreciation for the music, food, and dance of the Francophone world.
The festivities will begin with Cajun music by the Li'l Orphans Cajun Trio at 3 p.m.
There will be music, dancing, and presentations by local schools. MC Abou Boukary, professor of French from Marlboro College, will host games for the public between sets by the band until 6 p.m.
Food will include items from Asta's Swiss Restaurant, Malien food by Dienaba Macalou, Crêpes by Simon, Diabolo Menthes by Marie Françoise, and desserts by Laurie.
The fun continues from 7 to 10 p.m. with Québecois music, foot tapping, and dancing by Keith Murphy, dance caller, and Becky Tracy, fiddler.
The suggested donation is $5 per person or $15 per family.
