The UVM Extension Master Gardener (EMG) program has two workshops coming up for Windham County residents.
On Sept. 7, learn how to make a hypertufa (man-made stone) trough, stepping stone, or sphere for your garden.
Each participant will make, and take home, an item of his or her choice. Materials are provided, but participants must bring their own mold, a sturdy pair of rubber gloves, and a dust mask. Beginners are welcome.
The workshop is from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Newfane Greenhouse, 391Route 30. The fee is $25 ($20 for EMGs). The instructor is Claire Johns, a veteran EMG volunteer. To register, write cjohns@gaw.com by Aug. 24.
On Sept. 14, the EMGs will present a wild mushroom foray from 10 a.m. to noon at Fort Dummer State Park in Brattleboro.
Justin S. Garner leads participants on this fun “hunt,” and will help participants understand the importance of mushroom identification, including their dangers, medicinal value, and edibility.
Garner's longstanding passion for learning about the wild plants and mushrooms all around us led him to a clinical education in herbal medicine. He practices out of Sweet Flag Medicinals Herbal Clinic & Apothecary in Brattleboro.
Meet at the park's entrance at 9:45 a.m. Bring a basket, bug spray, a hat and other bug protections, and wear good walking shoes. Register for this walk by writing windhamcountyemg@gmail.com.
