BRATTLEBORO — Thank you very much for your article on the importance of end-of-life discussions. Talking with friends and family long before there's a need just makes things less stressful for everyone.
This topic is so generally avoided that it's easy for there to be confusion. There are a couple of clarifications to the article that I feel are needed.
Most important is that readers know that only two adults are needed to witness a directive; a notary is not required.
The Advanced Directive process has been designed to be easily available. The Vermont Ethics Network (www.vtethicsnetwork.org) has lots of info and all the Vermont forms.
Secondly, the focus that Sustainable Aging has to help people learn about the choices and possibilities at end of life - long before the end. My work is not during the actual end-of-life journey.
It helps if family and friends have had conversations about their values and hopes way in advance. There is so much to be gained by being aware of the support and information that is available.
I hope the workshop series at the Gathering Place on March 6 and 20 will be packed with people who want to experience a gentle (even enjoyable) way of getting their directives done.
