Democratic Senate candidates to hold forums

BRATTLEBORO - The Windham County Democratic Committee is sponsoring a series of forums featuring the four candidates for the Democratic Party nomination for the county's two Senate seats.

Participating are incumbent Jeanette White of Putney and challengers Roger Allbee of Townshend, Rebecca Balint of Brattleboro, and Joan Bowman of Putney.

Forums are Thursdays at 6:30 p.m. on July 24 at the Townshend Town Hall, July 31 at the lower theater of the Bellows Falls Opera House, and Aug. 21 in Brattleboro at a location to be announced.

Primary elections are Tuesday, Aug. 26.

Marlboro hosts townwide tag sale, silent auction, bake sale

MARLBORO - The annual townwide tag sale is set for Saturday, July 26, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in Marlboro Center.

Look for great bargains on used clothing, furniture, books, toys, housewares, and more. A bake sale and silent auction are featured, offering two buildings full of stuff. On Sunday, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., everything is free.

All proceeds return to the community through the Marlboro Alliance. Beneficiaries include the Marlboro Volunteer Fire Department, Marlboro Cares, the Women's Freedom Center, the Reformer Christmas Stocking, and local food pantries.

Jamaica hosts annual Old Home Day on July 26

JAMAICA - On Saturday July 26, from 11 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., Jamaica marks Old Home Day with a party and parade on Main Street (Route 30).

Look for a parade with floats and bands, events, races, prizes, foods, music and dancing, games for kids, a magic show, and even a train ride around town.

A free exhibition of quilts, arts, and crafts is featured, showcasing the talented women of Jamaica. A flea market, Abenaki singing, Vermont history and culture, vendors, entertainers, and a chicken barbecue round out the day.

A square dance with Vermont's famous “Bills Band” is set for 7 p.m. For more information call 802-380-4508.

Yankee Male Chorus returns

BRATTLEBORO - The renowned men's singing group Yankee Male Chorus returns for its 61st tour.

The four concerts they give each year consist of more than 40 men singing in four-part harmony from sacred, popular, spiritual, Broadway, and novelty music. All are volunteers from choirs and choral groups throughout New England, New York State, and other areas. Several members are local men.

The chorus meets Wednesday afternoon for its only rehearsal, and goes public that night for four consecutive evening concerts.

The wonderful sound this year will be heard first on Wednesday, Aug. 6, at the First Congregational Church of West Brattleboro, 880 Western Ave.; Thursday, Aug. 7, at Charlestown Congregational Church, 71 Main St. (Route 12); Friday. Aug. 8, at Walpole First Congregational Church, 15 Washington Square; and Saturday, Aug. 9, the finale, as always, at the White Church in Grafton.

Concerts begin at 7:30 p.m. There is no cost to attend, though donations may be sought at intermission. All locations are handicapped-accessible.

Register now for BAJC Hebrew School

WEST BRATTLEBORO - Congregation Shir Heharim, the Brattleboro Area Jewish Community, begins once-a-week Hebrew school classes on Sept. 8 for youngsters starting at age 6.

The curriculum includes Hebrew language, as well as Jewish studies: culture, history, music, prayers, beliefs, and customs. The school meets on Monday afternoons from 3:45 to 5:45 at the synagogue at 151 Greenleaf St. Although designed for the children of members, the school will accept new students for one year even if their parents are not yet members.

Students planning to become bar- or bat-mitzvah need to be enrolled in the school for at least one full year prior to their bar/bat mitzvah year. Registration forms and a $100 deposit must be sent in by the end of July to guarantee admission.
