West Brattleboro Association offers free movie night
WEST BRATTLEBORO - The West Brattleboro Association presents “The Triplets of Belleville” (2003; animated; kid friendly) as the main feature of its first free movie night, Thursday, Aug. 21. The film will be screened outdoors at dusk next to the West Brattleboro Fire Station. Shorts begin at 7:30 p.m. The main feature starts at 8.
Arrive early for bike-powered smoothies from the Bellows Falls Community Bike Project, on sale at 7, and music, circus toys, ice cream donated by Chelsea Royal Diner, and free popcorn.
Park in the school lot next to the fire station. Bring chairs. Seating is on the gravel lot to the left of the station. The rain date is Thursday, Aug. 28.
Healing walk at Manitou
WILLIAMSVILLE - The Manitou Project invites you to a healing meditation walk on Friday, Aug. 22, from 4 to 6 p.m. on Manitou's Sanctuary Trail. Guided by Kirsten Edelglass, the walk includes poems or other readings and occasions to share about the experience.

Glow-in-the-dark art at South Londonderry Free Library
SOUTH LONDONDERRY - Children 4 and older are invited to the South Londonderry Free Library on Saturday, Aug. 23, at 10:30 a.m. for a glow-in-the-dark art project with artist/illustrator Christine Mix.
The kids will learn the science of what makes things glow. The event is part of “Fizz Boom Read,” a Vermont Department of Libraries summer reading program. Attendees will make glow-in-the-dark art and bookmarks. All are welcome.

Dummerston hosts Open Farms Day
DUMMERSTON - Dummerston celebrates its history and agricultural diversity with an Open Farms Day on Saturday, Aug. 23, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Meet the farmers, tour the farms, and marvel at the history, creativity, and connection to community that make agriculture an integral part of life here and statewide. Participating are Bunker Farm, Elysian Hills Tree Farm, Dwight Miller and Sons Orchard, Mountain Mowings Farm, New Leaf CSA, Scott Farm, and Walker Farm, all of which will be open to visitors.
The tour ends with a farm picnic at 4:30 p.m. at Bunker Farm, prepared by Dummerston Grange.
Guests will appreciate each farm's products and place in Dummerston's agricultural profile: Christmas trees to flowers, fruits, maple syrup, meats, and vegetables included. See each farm for maps. AARP offers driver safety workshops
BRATTLEBORO - The AARP Driver Safety Program, a classroom driver refresher course, is offered here at multiple locations. The course explains changes that occur in vision, hearing, and reaction time as we age and incorporates findings from recent brain studies. Useful driving safety tips are presented with focus on changes in vehicles and roadways that impact driving safety, as well as recent changes in Vermont law.
Four-hour classes are scheduled Saturday, Aug. 23, 10 a.m., at Brattleboro Memorial Hospital; Wednesday, Aug. 27, 5 p.m., at Brattleboro Savings & Loan; and Friday, Sept. 12, 9:30 a.m. at the Brattleboro Senior Center.

West Townshend thrift shop to hold bag sale
WEST TOWNSHEND - The Thrift Shop at the West Townshend Country Store will hold an end-of-summer sale Saturday, Aug.23, and Sunday, Aug. 24.
You'll pay only $5 per bagful of clothing and shoes for men, women, and children, and household items. Open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. All proceeds benefit the non-profit West River Community Project. The shop is on the second floor of the West Townshend Country Store, Route 30 and Windham Hill Road.
Lions pancake breakfast is Aug. 23
BRATTLEBORO - The Brattleboro Area Lions Club will hold a pancake breakfast fundraiser on Saturday, Aug. 23, from 8 a.m. to noon in the Vermont Hall dining room on the campus of the Austine School. The venue is wheelchair accessible and affords a striking view of Brattleboro.
The price is right, too: $7 for all-you-can-eat pancakes (blueberry, chocolate chip, and gluten-free). Bacon, sausage, coffee, and orange juice are also served. Kids 5 and under eat free when accompanied by an adult. The Austine School is just off Maple Street.

Grafton Cornet Band in concert
GRAFTON - The Grafton Cornet Band presents a concert on the library lawn on Main Street (Route 121) on Sunday, Aug. 24, at 4 p.m.
This informal, hour-long mix of familiar, upbeat music for the whole family in beautiful surroundings, is free. Of course donations are warmly welcomed. Bring chairs or a blanket and maybe a picnic. Firefighters host annual pancake breakfast
BRATTLEBORO - Brattleboro Firefighter's Benefit Association serves up its annual all-you-can-eat pancake breakfast on Sunday, Aug. 31, from 7 to 11 a.m. at the West Brattleboro Fire Station on Western Avenue.

Grace Cottage hosts 'Healthier Living with Diabetes' group
TOWNSHEND - Grace Cottage Hospital hosts a self-management workshop for diabetics and their caregivers on Thursdays, Sept. 4 to Oct. 9, from 9:30 a.m. to noon.
The free workshop is a collaboration of Grace Cottage, Brattleboro Memorial Hospital, and the Vermont Department of Health.
Organizers say the workshop will teach participants how to take control of the disease, how to stay optimistic and deal with associated emotions, and how to make better food and exercise choices. Also included: tips for effective communication with family, friends, and medical providers.
