BRATTLEBORO — The Alzheimer's Association invites Brattleboro residents to participate in the Walk to End Alzheimer's, set for Sunday, Sept. 14, at the Brattleboro Retreat.
Organizers say the Walk to End Alzheimer's is more than a walk: it's an experience for the 100 participants and 18 teams in Brattleboro who will learn about Alzheimer's disease and how to get involved with this critical cause, from advocacy opportunities and clinical trial enrollment to support programs and services.
Walk participants also will join in a meaningful ceremony to honor those affected by Alzheimer's disease.
According to Maggie Lewis, regional director of the Alzheimer's Association Vermont chapter, the Brattleboro Walk to End Alzheimer's is two-thirds of the way toward meeting its fundraising goal thanks to Team Lillian Lavoie.
“They've received a $5,000 contribution - the largest single donation in our walk's history. We are confident the Brattleboro community will help us reach our goal of raising $15,000 at this year's Walk to End Alzheimer's,” Lewis said.
The two-mile walk is supported by local community partners Brattleboro Retreat, Valley Cares, MetLife, Prentiss Smith & Company, Vernon Greene, Thompson House, Pine Heights, Biologic Integrative Healthcare, and Holstein Association USA.
Lewis said Alzheimer's disease is a growing epidemic and the nation's sixth-leading cause of death. As baby boomers age, the number of individuals living with Alzheimer's disease will rapidly escalate, increasing well beyond today's more than 5 million Americans to as many as 16 million by 2050.
