Unruh, Harris, Sund win in special election

VERNON — Josh Unruh and Sandra Harris won their respective Selectboard races on Tuesday in a special election.

Unruh won a two-year seat on the board. He received 243 votes. Robert Miller Jr. got 146 votes, and Robert Goodnow got 48 votes.

Currently board president of the Recreation Department, Unruh is also a member of the town Emergency Management Committee and chair of the Vernon War Memorial Committee.

Harris defeated Bruce Gauld, 260-174, for the three-year seat. It marks a return to the board for Harris, who was first elected in 2012 but narrowly lost her re-election bid to Mike Courtemarche in March's election. Harris also served as Vernon's Town Clerk for 23 years.

Harris and Unruh replace Jeff Dunklee and Patty O'Donnell, who both resigned after this year's Town Meeting.

There also was a race for the Board of Listers. Jeremiah Sund defeated Perley Sparrow, 233-185, to fill the unexpired term of Phyllis Newton, who resigned from the board.

Town Moderator Tim Arseneault said the turnout for the special election was 450 voters, or approximately one-third of the total checklist.
