Route 5 bridge work set for 2017

GUILFORD — The Route 5 bridge crossing the Broad Brook in Guilford is scheduled for a full replacement, according to officials at the Vermont Agency of Transportation (AOT).

“Construction is scheduled for the summer of 2017 after school is out,” wrote AOT Project Manager Rob Young in an email to The Commons.

The bridge, known as “Bridge 5,” located at the south end of Algiers village, has some structural deficiencies, according to the AOT.

The agency's studies concluded it was more cost-effective to remove the current bridge and replace it with a new one.

The Scoping Report from the AOT, dated October 24, 2013, also noted, “The bridge is too narrow for the roadway classification considering the vehicle and pedestrian traffic anticipated at the river crossing."

Young said construction will necessitate a 28-day road closure and an off-site detour.
