BRATTLEBORO — Recently, members of Brattleboro Union High School's Students Supporting Veterans (SSV) group teamed with another local veteran's support organization to clear debris and perform landscape work at a mobile home in Tri-Park in West Brattleboro.
A veteran who was homeless will be moving into the home. SSV is partnering with Home At Last (HAL), a small community organization that purchases and rehabilitates mobile homes. Working with the Veteran's Administration, HAL locates homeless veterans who would be eligible for residency in one of HAL's six area homes.
BUHS students have been working on behalf of homeless veterans for three years. In addition to direct support for veterans, SSV students have done fundraising and educational activities about the plight and needs of homeless veterans.
This year, students raised more than $1,500, which will be donated to Home At Last for its ongoing efforts to provide homes to veterans. Primary financial support for HAL's projects come from local donations augmented with occasional local and state grants.
SSV students plan to continue their efforts on behalf of homeless veterans. The BUHS faculty advisors are Chris Day and Tessa Anders.
