Two branches of People's United Bank on opposite ends of Windham County were held up on Monday.
Police say they don't believe the robberies in Wilmington and Brattleboro are related, and there were no injuries. The suspects in both incidents are still at large as of press time.
The first robbery took place in Wilmington at about 9:15 a.m.
Wilmington and Vermont State Police said a white male entered the front door to the People's United Bank branch at 29 East Main St.
Police said the man handed the teller a note demanding money. The man was described as being possibly in his late 20s with a mustache and wearing a white sweatshirt with the hood up.
No weapon was displayed during this robbery, police said.
The man left on foot out the front door with an undisclosed amount of money, police said, and it is not known whether a vehicle was involved.
Later in the day, at about 4:30 p.m., in Brattleboro, police responded to the People's United Bank branch at 100 Main St. for a report of a robbery.
According to an email from Brattleboro Police Capt. Mark Carignan, “responding officers learned that during the course of the robbery the suspect threatened to detonate a bomb inside the building.”
Carignan said that the suspect “left a suspicious item inside the bank after robbing it of an undisclosed amount of money.”
Brattleboro and Vermont State Police secured and contained the crime scene and evacuated a section of Main Street. The State Police bomb squad was called in and later determined that the suspect device left in the bank lobby was not an explosive.
Carignan said the Brattleboro Criminal Investigation Division continues to investigate the robbery and bomb threat.
It was the second robbery of People's Main Street branch in Brattleboro this year.
