Young musicians participate in Windham Orchestra Concerto Competition

BRATTLEBORO — Twelve local students recently took part in the annual Windham Orchestra Concerto Competition.

Sungho Moon of Amherst, Mass., a 14-year-old cellist, was named the winner, and will be heard as a soloist with the Windham Orchestra at three upcoming performances.

Judging took place Feb. 10 at the Brattleboro Music Center, and as the orchestra's music director Hugh Keelan said, “Four experienced judges were given a day of musical delight, and were astonished at the level of playing.”

Moon will perform in three concerts:

• Thursday, March 31, Music In The Schools, 9:30 a.m., at the Latchis Theater in Brattleboro (not open to the general public).

• Friday, April 8, 7:30 p.m., at the Bellows Falls Union High School Auditorium in Westminster.

• Saturday, April 9, 7:30 p.m., at Brattleboro Union High School Gymnasium, 131 Fairground Rd.

The competition also singled out Simon Herron, who will play a solo for marimba and orchestra composed by his brother, Felix Herron, at those concerts. In addition, David Horak of Norwich, Vt., will be engaged as solo violinist for a concerto with Windham Orchestra during the 2017-18 season.

2016 Concerto Competition Participants include: Jeffrey Arnold, Greenfield, Mass.; Mary Browning, Leyden, Mass.; Matthew Chapin, Bellows Falls; Amanda Dee, Amherst, Mass.; Emma Dennis-Knieriein, Northampton, Mass.; Jesse Johnson, Greenfield, Mass.; Yena (Molly) Li, Greenfield, Mass.; Ben Moss-Horwitz, Florence, Mass.; Nathan Provost, Greenfield, Mass.; Evan Saito, Florence, Mass.; and Galen Winsor, Northampton, Mass.

All runners-up will be offered an opportunity to read through their concerto with the Windham Orchestra and have been invited to join the Orchestra. For more information, visit www.windhamorchestra.org.
