Explore old cellar holes in Grafton
GRAFTON - On Saturday, June 4, from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., longtime resident Richard Warren will lead a walk to some intriguing ruins from the small settlement of Old Grafton. Cellar holes are excavated pits that retain the foundation stones of their previous structures. A favorite key to the cultural history of an area, they also reveal a lot about the people who made them and used them in their daily lives.
A good explanation of them and other cultural and historic resources may be found in a 49-page booklet by Robert Sanford and Don and Nina Huffer, Stonewalls & Cellarholes: A Guide for Landowners on Historic Features and Landscapes in Vermont's Forests and is published by the Vermont Department of Forests, Parks, and Recreation.
Participants on this free Pinnacle Association program are encouraged to wear waterproof shoes and bring along a camera and water. They should meet at the parking lot opposite The Nature Museum, 176 Townshend Rd., in Grafton, to carpool. Register for the program by calling Beverly Major at 802-387-5737.

Flood mitigation talk presented in Putney
PUTNEY - Staff of the Vermont Department of Environmental Conservation will speak on “Understanding Rivers and Streams” and describe the state's new approach to flood mitigation on Tuesday, June 7, at 6:30 p.m., at the Putney Fire House.
If you live in a house on a bluff with a stream far below, why worry about flooding? If you straighten out a curve in a stream so flood waters pass by quickly, what will happen to your neighbor's land downstream?
John Broker-Campbell, Flood Plain Manager, and Marie Caduto, Watershed Coordinator, from the Vermont Agency of Natural Resources' Department of Environmental Conservation, will help people set up “Stream Table” experiments beginning at 6:30 p.m. The Stream Table is an interactive model of a flowing river that simulates the dynamic processes of moving water and sediment.
At 7 p.m., they will give a formal presentation describing the state's new approach to mitigating flood hazards. The new state approach grew out of Vermont's experience with Tropical Storm Irene, and focuses on maintaining river and stream stability within natural corridors.
The Putney Conservation Commission is sponsoring the talk and will serve light refreshments.
