Halifax Union Society celebrates 125th anniversary

HALIFAX — On July 31, the Halifax Union Society will celebrate its 125th anniversary as an independent, nondenominational church in nearby Halifax Center.

The Society's inclusive, neighborly atmosphere and its peaceful hilltop setting have appealed to a diverse group of local residents, summer residents, and visitors since 1891, according to a news release.

This year, Sunday evening services begin June 19 and will continue through Sept. 4. A special 125th anniversary celebration service will be held July 31. All services begin at 6 p.m. The Rev. Dr. Marcia Dorey serves as pastor. The public is invited to potluck picnics on the front lawn at 4:30 p.m. on the opening and closing Sundays.

Rev. Dorey's worship theme this year is “The Feminine in the Bible,” focusing on biblical examples of positive and negative relationships between men and women. Hymns are chosen spontaneously by the congregation from hymnbooks that contain a mix of traditional and revival tunes. Organist Merrillyn Courser provides musical direction.

At every service, members and friends bring food donations for the Deerfield Valley Food Pantry in Wilmington.

The church is at 44 Stowe Mountain Rd. in Halifax Center, two miles uphill from the school in West Halifax.
