Town gets complaints about discolored water

BRATTLEBORO — The Brattleboro Water Department has received complaints about slightly discolored water from customers of the Brattleboro Water System.

Because of drought conditions and the replacement of a million-gallon storage tank, the Water Department says it was unable to conduct fall water-main flushing, according to a news release. Flushing normally occurs in the spring and fall and removes organic materials and minerals from the water distribution system.

The department says that naturally occurring minerals, primarily iron, are typically to blame for water discoloration. These minerals, which are heavier than water, settle in water pipelines and may be stirred up from increased water flows in the town system.

They say the discolored water poses no health hazards and that the Brattleboro Water System is in full compliance with public water supply standards.

The department recommends residents run the cold water tap (not hot) to help clear the discoloration and call the Brattleboro Water Department at 802-254-4255 with any questions or concerns.
