Putney School hosts exhibit of visual art by musicians

PUTNEY — Eye of the Song: Visual Art by Musicians is on display until May 20 at the Michael S. Currier Center Gallery at The Putney School.

This multimedia exhibition celebrates visual work created by artists better known for their music. These musician/artists are revered for their work in musical genres ranging from “old-time” rock and jazz to folk-punk and Czech bluegrass.

Many had extensive formal training in photography, painting, sculpture, drawing, or print-making before finding themselves in prominent musical careers. Some are self-taught. But for all, Eye of the Song is “an affecting glimpse into rich, surprising connections between the visual and the sonic,” according to a news release.

Curated by Susan Brearey, the coordinator of the Michael S. Currier Center Art Gallery, artists include Sam Amidon, Sam Andrew, Anna & Elizabeth, Pete Bernhard, Justin Vivian Bond, John Cohen, Cynthia Connolly, Tim Eriksen, Polly Frizzell, David Getz, Sean Greene, Peter Himmelman, Bob Johnson, Norman Kennedy, Peter Lewis, Robin MacArthur, Lubos Malina, Bob Neuwirth, Jan Ori, Ida Pearle, James Roberto, Peter Rowan, Donald Saaf, Rowland Salley, Frank Sansone, Austin Tufts, Butch Vig, and Steve West.

Also part of the exhibit are Putney alumni David Amram '48, John Byrne Cooke '58, Willa '05 and Glenna Van Nostrand, plus some surprise guests.
