Sheriff''s Office to conduct training in Townshend

TOWNSHEND - On Monday, March 19, from 6 to 9 p.m., the Windham County Sheriff's Office will conduct training at Leland & Gray High School in Townshend.

According to a news release from Sheriff Keith Clark, the training will require deputies to attend the training in their assigned, marked sheriff cruisers and to be in uniform. The public will likely see a significant number of deputies and cars near the school.

This is the third training in a three-part series. The training is focused on the strategies, tactics, and communication when responding to crimes in progress. The training was developed and scheduled in the fall of 2017, with the first portion of the training occurring in January 2018.

Senior meal, pancake breakfast served in Halifax

HALIFAX - The monthly Halifax senior meal is Friday, March 16, at the community hall located at 20 Brook Rd. in West Halifax.

The menu features a New England boiled dinner with corned beef, cabbage, carrots, potato, turnip, and beets, with homemade cornbread and Irish soda bread on the side, and dessert. All seniors are welcome. A call to Joan is appreciated at 802-368-7733.

Then, come on back to the community hall on March 24 for a pancake breakfast fundraiser to help pay for insulation of walls and floors at the hall.

Serving begins at 8 a.m. and ends at 11 a.m. There will be pancakes (blueberry, plain, and chocolate chip), biscuits and sausage gravy, eggs Benedict, scrambled eggs (upon request), home fries, muffins, and juices, coffee, and tea.

Pet vaccination clinic in Newfane

NEWFANE - The NewBrook Fire Department will sponsor a pet vaccination clinic at the firehouse on Route 30 in Newfane on Saturday, March 17, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Dr. Miles A. Powers of East Dover will vaccinate both dogs and cats. This clinic is open to anyone. Fees are $15 for rabies and $25 for a distemper-complex vaccine for either a dog or cat, or $35 for both vaccinations.

Valley Lions flipping pancakes during Maple Fest

WHITINGHAM - On Saturday, March 17, the Whitingam-Halifax Lions will once again be flipping pancakes, with bacon, sausage, and eggs on the side, at the Whitingham Municipal Center, during the town's annual Maple Festival.

A hearty Vermont breakfast - including juice, milk, coffee, and tea, and real maple syrup - will be served from 7 to 10 a.m. at a cost of $9 per adult and $7 for seniors and kids from 5 to 12. Children under 5 eat free.

Guilford Church Sugar-on-Snow supper set for March 17

GUILFORD - The Sugar-on-Snow Supper at Guilford Community Church will be held on Saturday, March 17.

The menu features ham, baked beans, deviled eggs, potato salad, coleslaw, freshly baked rolls, sugar on snow, homemade donuts, pickles, and coffee, tea, or milk. A half-gallon of maple syrup will be raffled off during each seating.

There are three seatings to choose from, at 4:30, 5:45, and 7 p.m. Prices are $12 for adults, $6 for children age 11 and under, and $3 for preschoolers. For reservations, call 802-254-9019 or email guilfordchurchsupper@gmail.com.

To get to the supper from Brattleboro, go south on Route 5 just past Guilford Country Store, left on Bee Barn Road, then left again to 38 Church Drive. The Guilford Community Church is one of the five oldest churches in Vermont, founded in 1767. The money raised at the Sugar Supper helps support the church's outreach in the community. Relay For Life of Windham County kicks off 2018 efforts

BRATTLEBORO - The American Cancer Society Relay For Life of Windham County will hold a free kickoff for the annual event on March 19, at 6 p.m., at American Legion Post 5. This carnival-themed event is open to the public and everyone is invited to learn about how to help the American Cancer Society save more lives from cancer.

Dr. Joesph Rosen, a three-time board certified general surgeon from Brattleboro Memorial Hospital, is the guest speaker. Rosen has more than 30 years of training and experience managing patients with breast cancer.

While at the kickoff, guests also will have the opportunity to register a team for the Relay For Life event, which will be held on June 8 at Brattleboro Union High School. A $50 Ramunto's Brick Oven Pizza gift card will be up for grabs during the raffle.

The Relay For Life movement unites communities across the globe to celebrate people who have battled cancer, remember loved ones lost, and take action to finish the fight once and for all. It is the world's largest fundraising event to fight every cancer, with 5,200 events nationwide and in 20 countries.

Relay For Life events are community gatherings where teams and individuals camp out at a school, park, or fairground and take turns walking around the track or path. Teams participate in fundraising in months leading up to the event. Last year, people participated in the Relay For Life of Windham County and raised more than $70,000.

Lead paint safety courses offered in BF

BELLOWS FALLS - Essential Maintenance Practices courses on lead-safe renovation will be offered by Lead Safe Homes in collaboration with the Vermont Housing and Conservation Board and the Vermont Department of Health.

The Vermont Essential Maintenance Practices courses will be offered free of charge, from 3 to 6 p.m., on Monday, March 19, at American Legion Post 37, 42 Rockingham St.

Vermont law requires that all landlords, property managers, contractors, and daycare facility owners follow EMPs to maintain painted surfaces in properties built before 1978. During the courses, participants will learn about the requirements of state and federal regulations governing lead, the health effects of lead in children and adults, lead-safe work practices, and how to protect themselves from liability.

BUHS bands in concert on March 20

BRATTLEBORO - The Brattleboro Union High School Music Department announces an “Almost Spring” bands concert on Tuesday, March 20, at 7 p.m., in the BUHS Auditorium. No admission will be charged for this event and the public is invited to attend.

Jazz Workshop will open the concert with arrangements of Chitlins con Carne by Kenny Burrell and Moanin' by Bobby Timmons.

They will be followed by the Jazz Band whose program includes Mongo Santamaria's Afro Blue, Duke Ellington's Cottontail, and Karl Suessdorf and John Blackburn's Moonlight in Vermont.

The Concert Band will close the evening with works that include excerpts from Aaron Copland's Appalachian Spring, John Mackey's Night on Fire and Julie Giroux's Journey Through Orion.

Reserve your plot now at community garden

BRATTLEBORO - The Brattleboro Recreation and Parks Department is taking reservations for the Stockwell Drive Community Garden Site. Returning gardeners may sign up for the regular fee of $25 until April 6, after which the fee increases to $35.

New gardeners can sign up starting April 9 for $25; after April 30, the fee increases to $35. New gardeners will be required to pay a $25 garden plot deposit.

Space is limited to 17 100-square-foot garden plots. Reservations will be on a first come, first served basis. To reserve your garden plot, stop by the Recreation and Parks Office at 207 Main St., weekdays from 9 a.m. to noon and 1 to 4 p.m., or contact garden overseer Peter Gaskill at 802-257-9346 or mispeat@comcast.net with any questions you may have.

Entries sought for 3 Generations Collaboration poster contest

TOWNSHEND - 3 Generations Collaboration invites teens to design a poster on the theme “Community Service Changes Lives.” Entries are due March 27, 2018.

The contest is open to students in grades 7-12 who attend Leland & Gray or live in one of the following towns: Brookline, Jamaica, Newfane, Townshend, and Windham. Home schoolers are welcome to participate.
