Everything is coming up aces for the Brattleboro Colonels baseball team as they finished last week with three shutout victories and a 10-0 record.
At Rutland on May 7, Leif Bigelow and Dan Petrie each hit a two-run homer in Brattleboro's 11-0 win over the Raiders in six innings at Tenney Field.
Tyler Millerick had a team-high three hits for the Colonels, and Jeremy Rounds, Ben Betz, Bigelow, and Petrie all added two hits each. Bigelow and Petrie combined to drive in six runs and the Colonels also stole five runs.
Bigelow was the winning pitcher. He held Rutland to one hit over six innings, striking out four, walking one, and hitting one batter.
Adam Newton, the Colonels' No. 2 starting pitcher, was equally dominant in a 16-0 win against Mount Anthony on May 9 in a five-inning game at Tenney Field cut short by the mercy rule. Newton struck out four, walked one, and held the Patriots to just four hits.
Kris Carroll hit a three-run double as part of an eight-run outburst in the second inning. Carroll finished with two hits and four RBIs. Bigelow drove in two runs, while Jeremy Rounds, Evan Finnell, and Jack Price each had one hit and drove in a run.
Betz drew his starting assignment of the season in a rematch against the Raiders on May 11 at Tenney Field, and he pitched the full seven innings and shut down the Rutland bats in a 6-0 win. Petrie gave Betz some runs to work with after hitting a three-run double.
Baseball
• Christian Thomsen went 4-for-4 and drove in three runs to lead Leland & Gray to a 12-2 win over Green Mountain in six innings on May 9 in Townshend. Pat McDonald went 3-for-4 and drove in two runs, and Luc DuGrenier and Thomsen split the pitching duties and combined for six strikeouts.
The Rebels finished the week with a 20-8 win at Twin Valley on May 11, and a 18-3 loss to Bellows Falls on May 12 to end up with a 6-4 record.
• Twin Valley split a home-and-home series with Woodstock. On May 7 at Baker Field, the Wildcats won, 8-6. Joey Rafus and James McGovern split the pitching duties for a combined eight strikeouts as they held Woodstock to four hits.
Connor Dupuis had two hits and drove in two runs for Twin Valley, while teammates Dylan Dupuis and Dylan Howe each added a pair of hits.
Woodstock beat Twin Valley, 16-5, on May 9. Allen Cole and Hayden Reed took turns pitching for the visitors, while Rafus went 2-for-3 in the loss. Twin Valley finished the week at 1-7.
Softball
• The schedule got tougher for Brattleboro, and the Colonels went 1-2 last week.
At Rutland on May 7, pitcher Hailey Derosia threw her sixth no-hitter of the season, striking out 14 with only three walks, in a 9-0 win.
Derosia also had three hits to lead the Colonels' offense. Lauren McKenney hit a home run as she and Julie Hendricks added two hits each.
The Colonels then faced the defending state champs, Mount Anthony, at Sawyer Field on May 9 and lost, 6-1.
The Patriots got off to a 5-0 lead after three innings, as some shaky defense by the Colonels opened the door for the champs.
Rachel Rooney and Mya McAuliffe each had two hits for Brattleboro. Winning pitcher Taylor DiCranian was only threatened in the fifth inning, when Kathryn Wocell, Garrett Shanks, and Kayla Leonard-Houle each got a single with one out. The rally was snuffed out with a double play.
On May 11 in Keene, N.H., the Colonels lost to the Blackbirds, 5-4. Winning pitcher Alyssa Bartlett struck out 12 and walked two batters. Gabby Hayden had two hits and two RBIs for the 10-4 Blackbirds, while Molly Harvey, Megan Healey, and Bartlett added one hit apiece.
Brattleboro ended the week at 9-2, but now has a good idea of what it needs to do better come tournament time.
• It's been a rough season for Bellows Falls. After losing 32-1 at Fair Haven on May 7 and 14-2 to Rutland on May 8, BF lost a heartbreaker to Windsor, as the Yellowjackets scored five runs in the eighth inning as they rallied to beat the Terriers, 18-13, on May 9.
Losing pitcher Paxton Santorelli pitched all eight innings for the Terriers and ended up with seven strikeouts against Windsor. Emma Graham hit an RBI triple in the third for BF, while teammate Abby Joslyn doubled in the sixth.
On May 11, the Terriers gave up 19 runs in the first inning and went to lose to the visiting Fair Haven Slaters, 22-6. Slaters pitcher Olivia Bowen struck out nine batters to get the win and hit a grand slam in the first inning.
Losing pitcher Paxton Santorelli struck out three batters. Ariana Beltran hit a two-run triple and Lila Guerrina had an RBI double to lead the BF offense. The Terriers finished the week at 1-10.
• After starting the week with losses to Springfield (10-5 on May 7) and Green Mountain (8-0 on May 9), Leland & Gray bounced back with two wins to improve their record to 6-3.
Olivia Brown had two hits and four RBIs as Leland & Gray mercy-ruled Burr & Burton, 17-0, in five innings in Townshend on May 10. Mariah Hazard added three hits, two RBIs, and three runs scored.
The next day, the Rebels mercy-ruled winless Twin Valley, 24-6.
Girls' lacrosse
• On May 11 at Natowich Field, Brattleboro pulled out a dramatic 12-11 win over Mount Anthony.
Tobin Lonergan (four goals, one assist), Liz Day (three goals, one assist), and Meg Ayotte (two goals) led the Colonel offense, while Sam Cragin, Avalon Johnston, and Mollie Patenaude each added a goal.
It was the third straight win for the 7-1 Colonels.
Boys' lacrosse
• Brattleboro dropped a pair of games last week to fall to 5-7 on the season.
Monadnock came to Natowich Field on May 9 and won, 9-2. In the first half, the high-scoring Colonels were held to just a single goal as they struggled to create offensive chances.
Chris Boucher and Nick Boucher each had a pair of goals for the Huskies, while Dominic Dow, Zack Morrell, Chandler Matson, Justin Joslyn and Isaac Jasinski each scored a goal. Huskies goalie Cullen Lloyd stopped 14 shots.
Two days later, the Colonels lost to Stratton Mountain School, 10-6.
Track & field
• The Connecticut Valley Conference finals were held in Keene, N.H., on May 12, and the Brattleboro boys finished second to Keene in the team scoring. Bellows Falls was fifth.
In the girls' meet, Hanover, N.H., was first, while Bellows Falls came in third and Brattleboro tied with Thetford for sixth.
Brattleboro's Jasper Reed won the boys' 100 and long jump, and was second in the 200, while teammate Evan Koch won the 110 hurdles.
Dylan Clark won the javelin for Bellows Falls, teammates Reno Tuttle took second in the discus and third in the shot put, and Shane Clark was second in the triple jump.
Bellows Falls' Michelle Marchica won the triple jump. Brattleboro's Kai Boyd (javelin) and Maggie Lonardo (100) both placed second, as did BF's Macie Streeter in the 300 hurdles. Brattleboro's Kharisma Boyd was third in both the 100 and 200.
Boys' tennis
• Martin Sipowicz, Alex Shuey, Jonah Petrie, Mason Powers, and Josh Nordheim swept the singles matches on May 9 as Brattleboro beat host Woodstock, 6-1.
Two days earlier, the Colonels beat Rutland for the first time in four years with a 5-2 win. Shuey, Petrie, Powers, and Nordheim were the singles winners, while Cole Merkle and Tom Szpila added a win at No. 1 doubles.
The Colonels ended the week at 5-4.
Senior bowling roundup
• Week 2 of the spring-summer season of the Brattleboro Senior Bowling League saw Team 8 and Team 1 (both 8-2) now sharing first place, while Team 2 and Team 5 (both 7-3) are tied for second place. Team 7 and Team 3 (both 5-5) are tied for third., followed by Team 9 (4-6), Team 6 (3-7), and Team 4 (2-8).
Sonya Shippee had the women's high handicap game (257) and series (679) for the second straight week. Norm Corliss had the men's high handicap game (244) and series (687). Team 8 had the high team handicap game (870), while Team 1 had the high handicap series (2,496).
In scratch scoring, Warren Corriveau Sr. (645) had a 600-plus series. Gary Montgomery (571), Fred Ashworth (556), and Marty Adams (532) all had a 500-plus series.
