Senior Center gets climate control

BRATTLEBORO — BRATTLEBORO - This winter, the Brattleboro Senior Center will be a little warmer.

Workers installed a Mars Air Curtain on the exterior door of the Senior Center, located on the ground floor of the Gibson-Aiken Center. This should stop the cold air coming into the room and help maintain a more pleasant climate for guests and staff.

Town Manager Peter B. Elwell explained how it works: When someone opens the door, the device sends a blast of warm air, which prevents the cold air from coming into the room.

Elwell announced this at the Sept. 18 Selectboard meeting, and said the curtain's installation was arranged by the Recreation & Parks Director Carol Lolatte and her staff.

Town Settles Dispute with Retreat Farm

BRATLEBORO - The Selectboard voted 3-0 to authorize an agreement between the town and the Retreat Farm Ltd. to settle a dispute about property valuation and tax exemption on the company's land.

At the Sept. 18 regular Selectboard meeting, Town Manager Peter B. Elwell briefly summarized the issue, and presented the agreement for the Board to authorize.

The town and the Retreat Farm were in negotiation in advance of a court trial when both parties realized their offers were close enough to avoid litigation.

The agreement specifies which parcels of land are tax-exempt and stipulates the farm's owners will pay the town a voluntary annual fee of $6,000.
