Broad Brook Community Center opens with Apple Pie Social

GUILFORD — Broad Brook Community Center invites friends and neighbors to its second Apple Pie (and ice cream) Social on Sunday, Nov. 11, at 3 p.m., to celebrate the grand re-opening of the Center after a first phase of accessibility and safety improvements.

The Center is located at 3940 Guilford Center Road. Admission is free.

As announced at the first Apple Pie Social last October, the Community Center's board of directors is engaged in a fundraising campaign to invest $1.2 million to upgrade the historic and beloved building in the heart of Guilford Center.

Owned by the Broad Brook Grange for more than 120 years, the building changed hands in January, and the first phase of renovations began in early summer.

At this year's social, the Community Center will show off the improvements made with community support: accessible ramp and entry; new planting area; two new accessible bathrooms; second story fire escape; and kitchen upgrades.

“Your Ideas. Your Support. Your Community” is the theme of this year's gathering, according to the Community Center's chair of fundraising and development, Gail Nunziata.

“Last year's Apple Pie Social was a place to exchange ideas for how the people of Guilford would use a refurbished Broad Brook Community Center,” Nunziata said in a news release. “With the completion of Phase 1, we are poised to put these ideas to good use.”

Phase 2, slated to begin in 2020, will complete the accessibility, safety, and beautification upgrades needed to complete the vision Guilford has for this old and new community center in the heart of town.

“Meanwhile,” Nunziata continued, “we hope our friends and neighbors will come to the grand re-opening, share great pie, and marvel at the improvements made so far.”
