BRATTLEBORO — Ambassador Peter W. Galbraith will address the Windham World Affairs Council (WWAC) on developments in the Middle East in “The U.S. versus Iran: Will a proxy fight in Syria, Iraq and Yemen lead to War?”
According to a news release, the talk, set for Friday, Nov. 30 at 7:30 p.m., marks the fifth year in a row that Galbraith has offered his knowledge and insider's expertise on this region to the community.
Galbraith is working on a mediation project related to Syria and has made 12 trips into the country in the last three years.
He has worked on Near East issues for nearly 40 years in government and as a mediator. In 2015, he led the first Harvard University trip to Iran since the 1979 revolution.
He also served as the first U.S. ambassador to Croatia from 1993 to 1998 and was the negotiator of the 1995 Erdut Agreement that ended the Croatia War.
A long time resident of Townshend, Galbraith began his career teaching at Windham College, the School for International Training, and Keene State College.
From 2011 to 2015, he represented Windham County in the Vermont Senate.
The WWAC has been an active presence in the community for several decades and presents its programs from a new Brattleboro base, Centre Congregational Church on Main Street.
Recently, this move has been facilitated by the arrival of a new pastor to lead the church. Rev. Scott Couper, who takes a particular interest in international affairs, supports WWAC activities, and has now joined the WWAC board.
