BRATTLEBORO — The town of Brattleboro and the Windham Southeast Supervisory Union will host the 20th annual Community Celebration of Diversity on Friday, May 3, from 5 to 8 p.m., during Gallery Walk.
Students, families, friends, and community members are welcome at this festive event celebrating diverse schools and communities. According to a news release, the theme of this year's celebration is “Voices of the People,” highlighting the perspectives and experiences of marginalized people.
This event will feature art and performances by the entire community, including Windham Southeast students from Brattleboro Area Middle School and Brattleboro Union High School, and elementary schools in Brattleboro, Dummerston, Vernon, Guilford, and Putney.
Elliot Street will be closed from Harmony Lot to Main Street for a festive block party with crafts, activities, entertainment, and food. All events are free and open to the public.
118 Elliot Gallery will be filled with a display of student work on the “voices” theme, as well as a selection of photographs from “I Am Vermont Too.” There will be activities for children including storytelling with Starr Latronica, and a young children's music and movement session with Robin Morgan.
On Elliot Street, there will be performances by Moxie, New England Youth Theatre and the Theater Adventure Program, Brattleboro Community Choir, a cappella groups Shoulder Narrows and Xpressivo, Morris Dancers, and a maypole dance led by Andy Davis.
Local organizations participating include Windham County NAACP, Meeting Waters YMCA, Edible Brattleboro, Mother Up!: Families Rise Up for Climate Action, Youth4Change, The Root Social Justice Center, Inclusion Center, Inc., Families First, Brooks Memorial Library, I Am Vermont Too, and KidsPLAYce.
Elliot Street Fish, Chips & More, Hazel, and Twin Flames Taqueria will have street food for sale.
