Summer stories and free books at the Rockingham Library

BELLOWS FALLS — On Monday, July 15, at 5 p.m., the Rockingham Free Public Library will welcome Marv Klassen-Landis, a Children's Literacy Foundation (CLiF) storyteller, illustrator, and author who will present a fun and entertaining storytelling program for the whole family.

After the program, each youth who attends will be able to select two brand new books to keep thanks to a Summer Readers grant from the Children's Literacy Foundation.

The Rockingham Library is able to provide this program with support from a CLiF grant. CLiF awards Summer Readers grants to organizations serving kids to help prevent the “summer slide” in literacy skills.

Research shows that children who don't read over summer vacation tend to lose literacy skills while children who do read improve their reading abilities. Research also shows that kids who are able to self-select the books they read over the summer experience the same positive impact as if they had attended summer school.

Klassen-Landis is a performer, writer, educator, and arts education consultant. He is also the author and illustrator of Jump, Children, Jump and the co-author of Please Talk with Me.

He writes poetry and fiction for children and adults and leads workshops, residencies, and family poetry parties. He co-founded Children's Voices Theatre, which is dedicated to inspiring young people to express themselves through writing and performing.

This program is free and open to the public. For more information, contact the Rockingham Library at 802-463-4270, email youthservices@rockinghamlibrary.org, visit rockinghamlibrary.org, or stop by the Library at 65 Westminster St.
