WILMINGTON — Come to downtown Wilmington on Saturday, Aug. 17, from 5 to 7 p.m., for the second of this summer's Village Strolls. Consistent with the theme of “Up-cycling,” the stroll will feature many ways to creatively reuse and recycle common objects.
'Recycle bingo' cards will be available at the Wilmington Works booths (in Riverbank Park and next door to Bartleby's Books). Participants can visit 10 different shops while they stroll (clues and directions will be posted around town), find an up-cycled or recycled item in each shop, and get a mark on their cards. Full cards earn entry into a raffle for local goods.
Pettee Memorial Library is hosting a workshop to up-cycle old T-shirts into rugs, starting at 5 p.m. Participants can bring three used, but clean, T-shirts to get started and may also join in the creation of a community art installment from found objects on the library lawn, where all necessary tools and materials will be available.
A lounge built of up-cycled items will be set up between the Village Roost and the Incurable Romantic, where traveling minstrel and lap steel guitarist John Emil will perform live from 5 to 7 p.m.
Artists led by local painter Ann Coleman will be set up on the Crafts Inn Lawn, starting at 10 a.m., and will stay through the stroll. They'll be joined at 5 p.m. by a master composter who will offer advice and workshops (at 5:30 and 6:30 p.m.) on composting and on up-cycling home food scraps into garden-boosting soil.
Bartleby's Books will host a plus-plus maker's lab, with free samples to take home while they last. The Nutmeg will be selling stroll-sized lobster rolls to take away during the Stroll from a tent beside Bartleby's.
