WOOL Radio gears up for annual Silent Auction

BELLOWS FALLS — WOOL 91.5 FM, community radio for Vermont and New Hampshire, will hold its 12th annual Silent Auction and Farmers' Market on Friday, Nov. 15, from 5 to 8 p.m., as part of the monthly BF3F arts night.

Having been on the air for 13 years - three as the largest full-power community station in New England - WOOL, also known as Black Sheep Radio, is supported by memberships, underwriting, and fundraisers of which this annual auction is a primary component.

“Every year, our auction brings not only a major contribution to our operating costs,” WOOL president and area architect Bill Holtz said in a news release, “it also brings us new members who have been attracted by the amazing deals the auction offers.”

The event, held at the station's broadcast studios at 33 Bridge St., features art, household goods, furniture, gift certificates from area businesses including shops and restaurants, and many other gift items. The auction will also include hot food items for sale and Athens Pizza of Bellows Falls will provide a cash bar of beer and wine to complement the food.

A good way to support the station and help keep WOOL on the air is by donating an item valued at $20 or more to Great Falls Community Broadcasting Company. Gifts are tax-deductible and can be left at the station. Or email borderpete@gmail.com or feedback@blacksheepradio.org.

At a Silent Auction, bidders use an anonymous number to list their bids and then write a higher bids as other bidders surpass the original. There's suspense and excitement as the bidding goes higher. When the bell sounds at 8 p.m., the highest bidder wins the item, often for an unexpectedly low price.

In past years, the event has featured vintage guitars, original artwork by area painters and sculptors, bedsteads, tables, chairs, sought-after services by local professionals, and gift certificates from regional restaurants. As always, there will be snacks, refreshments and a party atmosphere.

This year, the Bellows Falls Farmers' Winter Market will take place concurrently, from 4 to 7 p.m., in the big room at 33 Bridge St. The market will have fresh fall produce, breads, jarred goods, local crafts, and live music.
