Liberty Union Party announces new name

The alternative Green Mountain Peace and Justice Party will have a fundraising concert on Sept. 10

DUMMERSTON — Liberty Union, Vermont's alternative political party that was established in 1970 in opposition to the Vietnam War and in support of working people around the world of all races, genders, and sexual orientations, is changing its name.

On the 2022 election ballots, Vermonters will see a new name - the Green Mountain Peace and Justice Party.

As described in a news release, the renamed party “continues to place environmental protection at the forefront of its agenda, along with advocating for collectively owned and democratically run workplaces, an end to racism and all other forms of bigotry, [and] an end to unfettered corporate greed.”

The party also “sees the freedom of all people to pursue their dreams as essential to the well being of society.”

Green Mountain Peace and Justice Party will be organizing town committees and welcomes the support from people throughout the state who align with the platform, which can be read in its entirety at greenmountainpeaceandjusticeparty.org.

The party invites “artists, orators, writers, climate activists, parents, students, labor organizers, musicians, road crew members, nurses, teachers, farmers, cashiers,” and others to join.

Party members believe that “capitalism objectifies and commodifies people, our labor and our creativity as well as the Earth, that it justifies exploitation and war, and that there is a better way.”

“Join us if you agree that a worker-owned, democratically led economy is a vision worth supporting,” party leaders urge.

An outdoor house concert will be held Friday, Sept. 10, at 6:30 p.m., in Dummerston, This event is a fundraiser for Indigenous land reacquisition.

The Village, a group from Down East Maine, will be playing blues, Orleans swing, Americana originals, and jazz in the style of Django Reinhardt. The rain date is Sunday, Sept. 12 at 4:30 p.m. Admission is by donation, with a range suggested of “$5 to $1,000.”
