Palaver Strings’ Beehive Chamber Series offers ‘The First Course’ at BMC

BRATTLEBORO — Palaver Strings' Beehive Chamber Series offers “The First Course,” a program of critically acclaimed string quartets throughout the ages, at the Brattleboro Music Center on Friday, Dec. 3.

The program begins with Grażyna Bacewicz's Fourth Quartet, which was entered into the Liège International String Quartet Competition in 1951 at the behest of the Polish Composers' Union. It was hugely popular and won first prize, cementing Bacewicz's place as one of her country's foremost composers.

The concert continues with Voodoo Dolls by acclaimed living composer Jessie Montgomery. Originally written for JUMP! Dance Company of Rhode Island, this piece features influences from west African drumming and elements of improvisation.

The final piece is Fanny Mendelssohn's String Quartet in E-flat Major, written later in her life and likely featured at her famous Sunday musical salons in Berlin.

Palaver Strings is a musician-led string ensemble and nonprofit organization based in Portland, Maine. Founded in 2014, Palaver has established itself as a forward-thinking ensemble whose mission is to strengthen and inspire community through music.

Tickets for the 7:30 p.m. concert are $20 and are available at bmcvt.org, by calling 802-257-4523, or by emailing info@bmcvt.org.
