Stringed instrument visiting artist plans open studio hours at HatchSpace

BRATTLEBORO — HatchSpace, 22 High St., is hosting visiting artist Tucker Barrett, who will hold a weekly open studio on Wednesdays, from 6 to 9 p.m., beginning on Dec. 1.

After nearly 25 years of designing and building electric violins, violas and cellos, Barrett is now dedicating his time to the repair and restoration of vintage and contemporary acoustic and electric guitars.

The public is invited to stop by, bring instruments to seek advice on restoration or improving playability and intonation, or simply watch Barrett at work.

Trained and apprenticed under Ken Parker at Stuyvesant Music in New York City, Barrett has built custom guitars for such musicians as Pete Townshend, Andy Summers, Lou Reed, and Nile Rodgers, as well as many other professional and amateur musicians. He has also repaired, maintained, and set up guitars for many groups, including the Pretenders, Foreigner, The Cars, The Police, and Joan Armatrading.

Setups and fretwork are Barrett's specialty. His experience and general understanding of how stringed instruments function and change, especially in New England, allow him to improve the feel, playability, and intonation of almost any instrument, whether used or new.

HatchSpace is a nonprofit woodworking workshop and school that offers memberships, woodworking classes and workshops for all levels, youth programs, and private instruction.
