Summer Reading Program kicks off at Lydia Taft Pratt Library

WEST DUMMERSTON — The Lydia Taft Pratt Library, located in the community center in West Dummerston, invites everyone to their 2022 Summer Reading Program kick-off event, “Help Rebuild the Underwater City of Atlantis!” on Saturday, June 11, from noon to 2 p.m.

In keeping with the 2022 Summer Reading Program theme, “Oceans of Possibilities,” the library staff says the kick-off event “is designed to delight and excite the creative energies of children of all ages, while we have fun with a variety of building toys, blocks, and bricks, and think about the enduring power of myths and stories.”

The ancient Greek philosopher Plato is responsible for telling the story of the cataclysmic destruction of the mythological civilization of Atlantis. The founders of Atlantis, he said, were half-god and half-human. They created a utopian civilization, made up of concentric islands that contained gold, silver, and other riches and supported an abundance of rare, exotic wildlife.

But when the people of Atlantis became greedy and petty, the gods to become angry. As punishment, they sent a terrible night of fire and earthquakes that caused the entire civilization to vanish into the sea.

Children attending this event will have the chance to build towers, structures, and cities, and help color the Oceans of Possibilities mural. They will also be able to register for the Summer Reading Program. There will be music and snacks and other activities, and children are welcome to dress in ocean-themed attire.

In conjunction with their kick-off event, the library will be resuming their Cinema Beneath the Stars film series also on Saturday, June 11, at 8 p.m. Folks are encouraged to bring lawn chairs, blankets, a picnic supper, and insect repellent.

The movie, rated PG, is a beloved and hysterical classic that involves pirates and a pirate ship, a princess who becomes a bride, a giant, an evil prince, and some Rodents Of Unusual Size.
