Clay-work and writing workshop planned in Putney

PUTNEY — Writer Fred Taylor and clay artist Alan Steinberg will offer “Reawakening to Life: Art and Nature as Healing Tools,” on Saturday, Sept. 10, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Together they have led work-playshops for many years that they say “emphasize the role of the arts and nature in healing our inner and outer relations with nature, self, and community. With Covid and its long periods of debilitating isolation, the need for that healing has never been greater.”

This workshop will include games and exercises from Joanna Macy's “Work that Re-connects,” a process that grounds a sense of interconnectedness in the web of life and empowers participants to take part in the healing of the world, “enabling them to transcend feelings of helplessness and hopelessness.”

“We will alternate between exploration and immersion in the forest habitat, and chances to express ourselves through both clay-work and writing. As we move back and forth between nonjudgmental writing and clay expressions, focusing on epiphany rather than on skill appropriation, those who have never sculpted or written before will discover talent they never knew they had,” they said in a news release.

The workshop will take place in the rich woodland habitat of the Putney Forest for Learning, including access to a large covered shelter. To learn more and read about the unique approaches of both Alan and Fred with their art forms, go to bit.ly/679-clay.
