Just Cause Eviction ordinance to be discussed

BRATLEBORO - Join VT Rights & Democracy and the Brattleboro Just Cause Eviction working group on Thursday, Oct. 27, at 6 p.m. at Epsilon Spires, 190 Main Street, for a community information meeting regarding a Just Cause Eviction ordinance in Brattleboro.

Officials, housing experts, and local activists are expected to offer details about what Just Cause Eviction is, why it's needed, and what one can do to ensure that tenant protections get onto the Brattleboro 2023 Town Meeting Day ballot. There will also be a chance to ask questions.

Speakers will include Tom Proctor, housing justice organizer with VT Rights & Democracy, State Rep. Emilie Kornheiser, D-Brattleboro, Democratic gubernatorial candidate Brenda Siegel, and Democratic candidate for lieutenant governor David Zuckerman (via Zoom), and other guests.

Organizers say they will offer refreshments and an opportunity to stay afterward for further conversation and planning. Turkey dinner served at Evening Star Grange

DUMMERSTON - Evening Star Grange in Dummerston Center will hold its last public supper of 2022 on Saturday, Oct. 29, from 4:30 to 6 p.m., with roast turkey, mashed potatoes, green bean casserole, and winter squash, with pumpkin upside-down pie for dessert.

The Grange will be returning to inside dining with a plate instead of a take-out box, although take-outs will still be available for those who wish. Reservations are strongly encouraged at 802-254-1138. Leave a name, phone number, number of meals desired, and whether the order is for eating in or taking out.

The cost of this meal will be $12, and all proceeds benefit the Grange's winter heat fund. For further information, call 802-254-2517.

Jack-o-Lantern Walk, Trunk or Treat, and Haunted Library

JACKSONVILLE - On Monday, Oct. 31, from 5 to 7 p.m., the Whitingham Free Public Library and The Deerfield Valley Lion's Club will host a Halloween event, featuring a Jack-o-Lantern Walk and Contest, Trunk or Treat, and a Haunted Library.

Free pumpkins are available by reservation at the library, or participants may bring their own. Jack-o-lanterns may be delivered to the library on Saturday, Oct. 29, from 9 a.m. to 2 pm or Monday, Oct. 31, 10 am–4 pm. You do not have to be present to win.

Visitors can see the jack-o-lanterns glowing in front of the Whitingham Municipal Center on Halloween and vote for the silliest, scariest, and strangest pumpkins.

There will be a spooky haunted walkthrough at the library for children (if they dare), and the Lion's Club will have outdoor carnival-style games. Volunteers are needed to set up a haunting display and add tricks or treats for the kids in their car's trunk or their truck for the newly added Trunk or Treat.

Landmark College partners with American Red Cross to host community blood drive

PUTNEY - Landmark College will host a community blood drive with the American Red Cross on Wednesday, Nov. 2, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., in the Café Court of the Strauch Family Student Center.

Blood is a perishable product that can only come from volunteer blood donors. With someone in the U.S. needing blood every two seconds, blood products must be constantly replenished, according to the Red Cross. Donors with all blood types are needed, especially those with types O negative, A negative, and B negative.

West End redevelopment discussed

SAXTONS RIVER - Join Saxtons River village officials and residents to discuss the West End Redevelopment of the Village's Main Street. A consulting team from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst will lead the event, a charrette, at Main Street Arts on Wednesday, Nov. 2, at 6:30 p.m. with pizza at 6 p.m.

The charrette features three uses for the site on 37 Main Street, drawn from previous public input. The group present will review sketches, site plans, and brief descriptions to refine and improve ideas.

The site has been a photography studio, an automobile repair garage, a hardware store, and a restaurant before Main Street Arts took it over. The town of Rockingham applied for the municipal planning grant which funds the 37 Main Street project.

Donations needed for silent auction

NEWFANE - The 20th annual Silent Auction to benefit NewBrook Fire and Rescue will go live Saturday, Nov. 26 through Monday, Dec. 5. The all-volunteer fire department, which serves the towns of Newfane and Brookline, has only a portion of its operating costs is supported by the towns. The remainder is raised through year-round fundraising, including this holiday season auction.

The auction committee is seeking items to auction: gift certificates for goods/services/guest stays, new and/or gently used items in good working order, collectibles, antiques, furniture and/or home furnishings, art, handmade crafts, holiday items, gift bags, and more.

Vendors sought for annual Thanksgiving farmers market

WALPOLE, N.H. - The Great River Co-op will host its annual Thanksgiving farmers market on the Common in Walpole on Saturday, Nov. 19, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Local farmers and producers will offer “everything you need for your holiday meals, plus holiday gifts,” organizers say. For information about becoming a vendor and to reserve a space, email info@greatriverfoodcoop.com. The cost for a space will be $20, payable the day of the event. Organizers request reserving spots by Nov. 11 so they can include vendors in pre-event promotions.
