SEVCA offers tax assistance

WESTMINSTER-Vermont homeowners can receive a reduction in property taxes by filing a Homestead Declaration by the Oct. 15 deadline. Once filed, the tax rate is discounted based on the homeowner's income.

Southeastern Vermont Community Action (SEVCA) offers free assistance with filling out the Homestead Declaration. Vermont homeowners are required to file a Homestead Declaration every year to receive the homestead property tax rate. Many individuals can lower their property tax bill by filing a Property Tax Credit Claim. The final deadline for these claims is also Oct. 15.

This assistance is part of SEVCA's Volunteer Tax Assistance (VITA) program. Every year, they help scores of people file their income taxes using the VITA program. They also assist Vermont residents with filing their Homestead Declaration, Property Tax Credit Claim, and Renter Rebate Claim.

For those having their taxes prepared, or in need of assistance with the Homestead Declaration, Property Tax Credit Claim, or Renter Credit, visit sevca.org/tax-services, or call or text their direct line to the VITA program at 802-428-3032.
