Brattleboro Senior Meals could use volunteers

BRATTLEBORO-Brattleboro Senior Meals provides a much-needed service to our community by cooking hundreds of meals each week which are then delivered by dozens of volunteers to area senior citizens and community members with disabilities.

Delivering meals is an incredibly rewarding volunteer opportunity that I would encourage everyone to try out.

The opportunity can be consistent or intermittent, if you prefer to be a substitute. I deliver every Friday on a route that takes me less than 90 minutes to complete from when I leave my driveway to when I get home again. There are shorter routes, too.

I can honestly say it is a highlight of my week. Supporting my neighbors feels valuable and grounding in a chaotic world: I know I've done something every week that has made a difference in someone's life.

I think it would also be wonderful if more local businesses would support this effort by encouraging their staff to volunteer during work hours by giving them flexibility with their hours or allowing volunteering to occur while an employee is on the clock.

Our community has many needs that are looking to be met. With Brattleboro Senior Meals, the infrastructure is ready and waiting for willing people to step in to meet one of those needs, so I hope you'll join me.

Even if it doesn't seem like this opportunity would fit into your schedule, I'd suggest reaching out to Cynthia Fisher, director of Brattleboro Senior Meals (director@brattleboroseniormeals.org or 802-257-1236), to find out more details and whether there's a way to be involved.

I know your contribution will be appreciated.
