BRATTLEBORO-The In-Sight Photography Project will launch its fall session of youth photography classes Monday, Oct. 6, offering opportunities for young artists to explore, experiment, and express themselves through the lens.
Classes are open to students ages 11–18 and will be held Monday through Thursday afternoons, with a Wednesday morning option for homeschooled students and others with flexible schedules.
This fall's lineup includes both new offerings and returning favorites. Students can dive into "Night Photography: Exploring Light After Dark" with instructors Kota Rayne and Ruthie Baker, learning about long exposures, star trails, and light painting.
Others may start with the "Intro to Digital Photography" class, taught by Kelly Fletcher, which covers the essentials of composition, editing, and creative seeing.
Those drawn to film can join "Analog Photography" with instructors Willoughby Carlo and Tim Callahan, while returning students can deepen their practice in "Advanced Analog," an intermediate course led by Laisa Bellomo-Johnson and Baker that tackles technical challenges and introduces large-format work.
A daytime class, "Experiments with Light," will be led by Program Director Rachel Boettcher. "Photography literally means 'to paint with light,'" she explained in a news release. "In this class, we'll play with everything from studio lighting to cyanotypes to cameras to see how far we can push what light can do."
Students can also join "Photo Club," In-Sight's most youth-driven class. "Photo Club gives the kids the power to decide what direction they want to go," says Boettcher. "They come up with the projects, they decide what's important to them, and the teachers support them. It's the most youth-led class that we have, and the most unpredictable, in the best way."
About the programs, one student shared: "The teachers are very nice. They seem as interested in the things I am, which makes everything feel more like an equal and fun place where you can explore your art." Another, when asked what they would remember most from class, simply said: "Making art that I am proud of."
All equipment is provided and tuition is structured so that no student is ever turned away for lack of ability to pay. To learn more about classes or to register, visit insightphotography.org.
