BRATTLEBORO-The Vermont Jazz Center (VJC) representatives are excited to announce the launch of the VJC Archive. A celebratory livestream and in-person event will be held Friday, Aug. 7, at 10 a.m., with jazz scholar and archivist Ben Young, who will provide an overview of the Archive.
For nearly three decades, under the direction of Eugene Uman and Elsa Borrero, the Vermont Jazz Center archive team has documented concerts, masterclasses, interviews, and educational programs. These historically significant gems include recent events as well as the special collection of VJC founder Attila Zoller that features recorded performances from as early as the mid-1950s.
Every four months, the VJC will present a new series that will include highlights from recent concerts, masterclasses from the Solo Piano Festival, a blast from the past, and three rare recordings from the Zoller collection.
The Archive’s online offerings from Series One will include:
• Concert Highlights: Brandee Younger, Joel Ross, and Etienne Charles, trumpeter.
• Masterclass Features: Elio Villafranca, Kris Davis.
• Blast from the Past: Gary Smulyan.
• The Zoller Collection: recordings with Hal Galper, Jimmy Heath, Howard Brofsky, and others.
“What began with Attila Zoller’s personal recordings has grown into a significant collection, documenting decades of jazz history,” said VJC Director Eugene Uman in a news release. “We’re excited to share these materials with audiences, students, musicians, and researchers around the world.”
The launch event with Ben Young will be held both in person at the VJC at The Cotton Mill, and livestreamed on vtjazz.org.
