ATHENS-The Athens Brick Meetinghouse Committee, in conjunction with the Athens Historic Preservation Society, hosts Cameo Baroque at the 1817 Brick Meetinghouse Saturday, Aug. 29, at 4 p.m.
Founded in 2014, Cameo Baroque — Leslie Stroud, traverso (Baroque flute); Beth Hilgartner, recorders and voice; Ernie Drown, harpsichord; and Laurie Rabut, viola da gamba — is Cameo Arts Foundation’s (CAF) “in-house” ensemble that specializes in the music of the Baroque era performed on period instruments.
Cameo Baroque is dedicated to bringing some less well-known masterworks of the Baroque era to audiences. Most programs include at least one work that has been transcribed and or arranged by Hilgartner from 17th- and 18th-century manuscripts available online from the International Music Score Library Project (imslp.org).
The program for this concert will include music of J.S. Bach, Telemann, Pachelbel, Sebastian Anton Scherer, Henricus Albicastro, and Johann Schenck.
CAF organizes and underwrites Cameo Baroque benefit concerts so communities in Vermont and New Hampshire have access to high-quality, affordable, live music and so organizations working to meet basic human needs receive much-needed support.
Admission to all CAF-sponsored concerts is by free-will offering, all of which goes to the Vermont Asylum Assistance Project, the designated charity for this concert.
The Athens 1817 Meetinghouse, also known as the “Old Brick Church” is a national historic landmark, located at 2 Meetinghouse Rd. just off Route 35. Still as it was in the mid-1800s, “it is a perfect venue for this music of the Baroque era,” wrote organizers in a news release.
