BRATTLEBORO-A local screening of the new documentary film, Cuba After Castro, takes place at the Latchis Theatre Sunday, Aug. 30 at 4 p.m.
Claiming the film shows the first and only American interview with Cuba’s little-known Miguel Díaz-Canel, organizers wrote in a news release that Cuba After Castro “explores the island nation’s lesser-known history and turbulent present in a revealing portrait of the man tasked with steering its future after Fidel Castro.”
Moving beyond the stereotypes, they said, “this film investigates the actual social and political reality of modern Cuba through the biography of its new leader.” Organizers said this is essential viewing “for anyone seeking to comprehend the real pressures shaping Cuba and the uncertain future of U.S.-Cuba relations.”
Cuba After Castro delivers the definitive portrait of Díaz-Canel, Cuba’s first leader born after the Revolution. The film chronicles Diaz-Canel’s formation as an unexpected successor to the Castros — an unassuming organizer molded by the revolutionary process. “Confronting a perfect storm of intensified U.S. sanctions, a media war, a devastating pandemic, and historic domestic protests, Díaz-Canel reflects on navigating these existential crises for the nation he has come to lead.”
This is the only area screening of this film, which has already been shown in major cities and college towns worldwide. After the Latchis screening, there will be a discussion led by Cubaphiles and authors Tim Weed and Lissa Weinmann.
