• Maryann Boese, 66, of Newfane. Died peacefully at her home August 3, 2026, surrounded by her family, following complications from liver cancer. Throughout her battle, she faced every challenge with remarkable strength, resilience, and grace, inspiring everyone who walked beside her. Born in Amityville, New York, Maryann moved with her family to Fieldstone Lodge in Newfane in 1971 and graduated from Leland & Gray High School in 1977. After graduation, she returned to Amityville for a time before later moving to Carlsbad, California. She eventually came back to Newfane, where she settled, built her life, and started her family. During her life, Maryann enjoyed many activities, but she found her greatest joy in the simple, meaningful moments. She spent countless hours building and tending her gardens, creating spaces that reflected her creativity and care. She loved hosting family gatherings and cooking for a crowd, filling her home with laughter, good food, and the people she cherished most. One of her favorite places was the beach, a spot that brought her peace and happiness. For many years, she and her daughters traveled to Vieques, Puerto Rico — a tradition she treasured deeply. Even toward the end of her life, she was joyfully planning her next trip. Her greatest accomplishments in life were her two daughters, Julia and Claire Miramontes. Being a mother was something she cherished more than life itself. She also adored being a Nana to her three grandchildren, a role that brought her endless joy. Nothing made her happier than watching them grow, celebrating their milestones, and surrounding them with her love. Maryann is survived by her two daughters, Claire of Newfane and Julia of Swanzey, New Hampshire; her brothers, Eddie of Grantham, New Hampshire, and his wife, Claudia, and Jimmy of New York City; her sister, Melanie of Vernon and her partner, Paul; and her spiritual sister, Sally, of Townshend. She is also survived by her son-in-law, Ricki Fish, and her three beloved grandchildren — Hadley, Isla, and Henry Fish. She was predeceased by her brother, Drake, of Halifax, Nova Scotia; and by her parents, George and Marion Boese. Memorial information: Funeral services will be held Saturday, Sept. 12, at 11 a.m. at St. Michael’s Episcopal Church, 16 Bradley Ave. in Brattleboro, followed by a reception at the Brattleboro Country Club. • William C. Campbell, 66, of Greenfield, Massachusetts. Died unexpectedly Aug. 15, 2026. Will was creative, a lover of color, a gardener extraordinaire, a dahlia whisperer, a collector of antique wallpaper, and the proud owner of three vintage AMC cars. He was a talented housepainter, Cubmaster of Cub Scout Pack 3, Scoutmaster of Boy Scout Troop 5, a past board member of The Friends of the Great Falls Discovery Center, and deeply involved in the Greenfield community he loved. Above all else, he was the beloved husband of Gina, father to Laura and Tyler, father-in-law to Thomas, and “Papa” to his first granddaughter, Birdie. Will was born Sept. 21, 1959, in Bellows Falls. He grew up in Saxtons River, surrounded by the love of his parents, Robert M. Campbell and Mary Elizabeth “Beth” Campbell, and his 10 siblings: Bobby, Lizzie, Averill, Michael (Erin), Sean (Joan), Peter, Margaret (Don), Charlie (Julie), Sarah, and Matt, along with sisters-in-law Marvie and Trudy. Will spent his childhood exploring the natural beauty of small-town Vermont. Each summer, the family gathered in Wellfleet, Massachusetts, on Gull Pond — a cherished tradition the Campbell family continues today. Will, his siblings, and friends spent endless days swimming, sailing, and reveling in the spirit of Cape Cod. He attended Saxtons River Elementary School, The Grammar School in Putney, and Bellows Falls Union High School. He went on to earn a B.A. in history from the University of Vermont in 1986, where he met some of his lifelong best friends. Will never shied away from an adventure. In 1974, after visiting his sister in Antigua, he crewed aboard a sailboat in the Caribbean. He later spent a memorable summer traveling across the Soviet Union. Following college, Will lived in Aspen, Colorado, skiing nearly every day and fostering a deep love for the sport and the American West. Gina and Will met at a ’70s costume party in Arlington, Virginia, in 1989, introduced by Will’s brother Charlie. After four years together in Arlington, they got married in 1993. They settled in Greenfield, purchasing their first home on Park Street. Will and his family spent time biking, skiing, swimming, sailing, and visiting parks and museums. Will was known for frying corn fritters on the hottest day of the year, transforming the house with inventive, colorful holiday displays, and taking Laura and Tyler on spur-of-the-moment day trips. He gave his children a life rich in exploration; Will was endlessly proud of them, and they of him. As his children grew, Will became deeply involved in Scouting. He received the 2018 Metacomet District Merit Award and guided 12 Scouts to the rank of Eagle Scout, including his son. Through Scouting, he met Anthony Bohannan, who found both a mentor and friend in Will and became an incredibly special member of the Campbell family. When not traveling, he was at home in his garden. Though it was a never-ending labor of love, this year’s garden is undeniably at its peak — vibrant, unique, and brimming with life, just as Will will always be remembered. • Charles E. Hamel, 93, died peacefully Aug. 17, 2026, surrounded by his family, at Sterling House in Bellows Falls. He was born in Montpelier, July 7, 1933, the son of Edward Crosby Hamel and Florence M. McGill. After graduating high school in 1951, Charles went into the Air Force and served as a communications expert, achieving the rank of Airman First Class. After the Air Force, Charles met and married the love of his life, Ann Dolores Romano. They were married June 3, 1961. Together, they had three daughters, Victoria Marie Shangraw of Bellows Falls, Jennie Drumand of Bellows Falls, and Valarie Janowski of Springfield, Vermont. He is also survived by seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Charles worked at Fellows Gear Shaper in Springfield, from which he retired after 32 years. Charles’ passions were gardening, art, skating, music, but his true passion was his family. Memorial information: A graveside service took place Aug. 29 at St. Charles Cemetery in Westminster.
• Rosalee Randall Martocci, 74, of Brookline. Died peacefully August 20, 2026, at Vernon Green Nursing Home following an extended period of declining health. Rosalee was born in Townshend on December 17, 1951, the daughter of Leonard and Mary (St. Pierre) Randall. She attended schools in Williamsville and Newfane, and graduated from Brattleboro Union High School with the Class of 1970. Although she worked several small jobs through the years, Rosalee considered herself a devoted homemaker whose life centered around her family. She enjoyed embroidery, sewing, cooking, making an occasional evening margarita, and spending time at home with her family. She loved small animals, especially her Chihuahua, “Baby.” On Feb. 6, 1970, at Dummerston Congregational Church, she married Paul S. Martocci, who predeceased her Jan. 11, 2021. Survivors include her two sons, Matthew Martocci and wife, Karen, of Townshend, and Paul Martocci Jr. and his girlfriend, Shelby, of Bellows Falls; two brothers, Frederick “Bud” Randall of Athens and Francis Randall of Brattleboro; one sister, Ramona Randall Severance of Brookline; grandchildren Paul and Alisha Martocci, and many nieces and nephews. • Karen Elizabeth (Clarke) Roberts, 85, of Brattleboro. Died Aug. 22, 2026. She was born in Brattleboro on Oct. 14, 1940, to Frederick and Elizabeth (Eddy) Castine. She lived a life marked by wisdom, kindness, generosity, and wit. A lifelong resident of the area, she attended Green Street School and graduated from Brattleboro Union High School with the Class of 1958. She was a faithful communicant of St. Michael’s Roman Catholic Church; a very important part of her life. She cherished spending time with her family and looked forward to going out to breakfast followed by yard sales or shopping with her daughters and granddaughters. She had a huge love of animals and enjoyed taking them for evening rides. She enjoyed doing crossword puzzles, reading, card making, and refinishing furniture. Her house was always immaculate and decorated beautifully for every holiday. She also enjoyed family cookouts and reunions. Karen had a special love for all animals, wild and domestic, even bugs and spiders; if she found one in her house, she would capture it and put it outside. She had many pets including dogs, cats, mice, raccoons, a pony, lamb, and an albino skunk. She loved to watch and feed the birds and squirrels from her dining room window. She was always fascinated with UFOs, reading countless books and watching TV shows about them. She loved telling jokes and sharing funny rhymes with her grandchildren, creating memories that will be treasured forever. Karen is survived by her five children: Arnold Clarke and wife, Sue; Kim Doleszny and husband, Mike; Michael Clarke and wife, Cynthia; Brian Clarke; and Katrina Willette and husband, Chris. She also leaves behind 10 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, and many nieces, nephews and dear friends. She was predeceased by her first husband, Arnold Clarke; her second husband, Walter Roberts; a granddaughter, Caitlin Cheslawski; five brothers, Robert, Herbert “Bud”, Ted, Fred, and Maurice; and two sisters, Rita Howe and Marilyn Momaney, making Karen the last of her siblings. She will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all who knew her. Memorial information: A funeral Mass was held Aug. 29 at 11 a.m. at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Brattleboro, with graveside committal rites and burial in St. Michael’s Parish Cemetery. • Edna P. Turner, 83, of Putney. Died after complications from pneumonia Aug. 21, 2026, at Brattleboro Memorial Hospital. Born in Haverhill, New Hampshire, and raised in Bellows Falls, she married Edward Turner in July 1961. She worked as a unit secretary on the third floor of BMH for more than 30 years. She loved her job and considered her co-workers family. She leaves behind her husband of 65 years, Edward Turner of Putney; her daughters Jeanette (Mike), Jenna, and Lisa Lofting (Jason Ewing) of Putney; granddaughters Eyvonne (Joshua) Martin of Westminster West and Meagan Stratton (Dylan Wilbur) of Swanzey, New Hampshire; great grandchildren Hayley Martin (August Will) and Joshua Martin (McKenzie Russell); and a great-great-granddaughter, whom she enjoyed meeting. She is also survived by her brother Ryan McLean (Sue) of Meredith, New Hampshire, and predeceased by brothers Robert, Richard, and Roderick, and a sister Betty Davis. Memorial information: There will be a brief graveside service at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery in Putney on Saturday, Sept. 12, at 11.30 a.m. (no chairs will be provided). A pot luck celebration of life will follow at the Putney Fire Station from noon to 3 p.m.

• A celebration of life for Marshall M. Wheelock will be held Saturday, Sept. 12, from 1 to 4 p.m., at American Legion Post 5 on Linden Street. Refreshments will be served and all are welcome.
