BRATTLEBORO-Under the Maple kicks off a series of fall house concerts with vocal quartet Doozy Jane Sunday, Sept. 13, at 4 p.m.
Specializing in songs written by women and queer artists, Doozy Jane is a four-part treble ensemble that’s “rooted in traditions of American harmony singing and swingy, fiddle-driven string bands,” according to a news release.
Doozy Jane members Anna Patton, Haley Anderson, Julia Read, and Sarah-Hadley Yakir perform original songs as well as covers, with arrangements that pair intricate vocal harmonies with bass guitar, tenor guitar, twin fiddles, and clarinet.
The quartet is named in part for Patton’s grandmother Jane, “who loved to sing the tricky inner harmonies of barbershop quartets,” the news release said, adding that “the quartet clearly shares a mutual love for ‘a doozy of a song.’”
Patton, on vocals, clarinet, and tenor guitar, is the group’s singing leader, composer, and arranger. She also directs the Soubrette Jazz Choir and Brattleboro Harmonia (formerly the Brattleboro Women’s Chorus).
Anderson, on vocals and bass guitar, “grew up covering classic rock songs in the basement with her siblings,” the news release said. She got her musical start playing saxophone and singing in community choirs and later toured the U.S. and Europe with Northern Harmony, an ensemble specializing in international polyphonic music.
Read, on vocals, violin, and guitar, is a member of the Soubrette Jazz Choir, where she met the other three women who would eventually form Doozy Jane. Read has recorded three albums and has performed with The Royal Frog Ballet and Theatre Truck.
Yakir is a vocalist who also plays both classical violin and contemporary fiddle. She tours with the folk-trad band River Road, whose debut album Over The Moon will be released later this year.
