PUTNEY-A troupe of young actors will perform a farcical play, The Family Vacation, Sunday, Sept. 13, at 2 p.m. at Next Stage Arts, 15 Kimball Hill Road South.
The Family Vacation is “a fast-moving theatrical romp filled with larger-than-life characters and fantastic physical comedy,” according to a news release. The actors are part of New England Youth Theatre’s Commedia Troupe, a group of middle and high school students who bring theater to schools and other venues throughout the region.
The play follows the Duchess of Navarre and her family on a trip to the seaside, where “the tides take a turn for the worse,” the news release said, and “the family soon finds itself battling not only the usual hazards of a seaside holiday — sunburn, sand, and squid — but also each other.”
Written by Rosa Palmeri and directed by Shannon Ward and James Fordi, The Family Vacation play draws inspiration from commedia dell’arte, an Italian theatrical tradition known for its stock characters, exaggerated emotions, and slapstick humor.
Tickets are $15 for adults and $10 for children 12 and under; they are available at nextstagearts.org. Doors open at 1:15 p.m.
