WEST DUMMERSTON-Cheryl Wilfong will read from her new book, Long Haul: A Historical Novel, Tuesday, Sept. 22, at 6 p.m. at Dummerston Community Center and Library, 150 West St.
The book tells the story of Wilfong’s great-grandfather, George, a farmer in Indiana, who contracted the flu during the 1918 pandemic and died from complications two years later.
“It’s Covid déjà-vu all over again,” Wilfong said in a news release.
Wilfong’s great-grandfather had a “long-haul” case, and the novel explores how George’s chronic illness burdens his wife, Vi, who cannot rely on their adult children for support: Their daughter is a Christian Scientist, and their son “loves life in the fast lane and nearly bankrupts them,” according to the news release.
Wilfong will read a few sections of Long Haul and then talk about learning to write fiction after 30 years of writing nonfiction, including her books The Meditative Gardener: Cultivating Mindfulness of Body, Feelings, and Mind and Following the Nez Perce Trail: A Guide to the Nee-Me-Poo National Historic Trail with Eyewitness Accounts.
Lydia’s Friends, which supports the Dummerston Community Center and Library with fundraising and advocacy, is sponsoring the reading. Refreshments will be served.
