BRATTLEBORO-Econoclast: Herman Daly and the Gospel of Growth, a new film written and directed by documentarian John de Graaf, will be shown Wednesday, Sept. 30, at 6:30 p.m. at the Latchis Theatre, 50 Main St.
Econoclast is a 45-minute portrait of Herman Daly, a former economist at the World Bank who advocated for ecological economics and sustainable development. Daly, who died in 2022, “is credited as the first mainstream economist to point out that ever-increasing economic growth is unsustainable on a finite planet and results in great inequality,” organizers said in a news release.
The film “asks us to choose other goals for our economy, including happiness, justice, social connection, and sustainability,” according to the release.
Interviewees include former Toronto mayor David Miller; Daly biographer Peter Victor; and Oxford economist Kate Raworth, who created “Doughnut economics” as a way to visualize how just and sustainable development can remain within planetary boundaries.
A panel discussion and Q&A with de Graaf will follow the film. De Graaf has been producing documentaries, primarily for public television, since 1977.
The screening, which is sponsored by the Institute for Policy Studies, will help kick off a Slow Living Revival series exploring community resilience. Admission is by donation, with $5 to $10 suggested. For more information, email Tristan Roberts at tristan@tristanroberts.org.
