NEWFANE-Recent coverage of 9/11 reminds me of Chile's own 9/11 - Sept. 11, 1973, when the Chilean military, with the full support of the U.S. government, overthrew the government of the democratically elected president Salvador Allende.
Three thousand people also died in the immediate aftermath of this coup, and tens of thousands of Chileans were tortured or disappeared immediately and in the following decades by the fascist regime of Gen. Augusto Pinochet, an ally of then-President Richard Nixon and then-Secretary of State Henry Kissinger.
Kissinger noted, without irony, that "the issues are much too important for the Chilean voters to be left to decide for themselves."
