BRATTLEBORO-I read Ann Darling's Viewpoint with growing unease. The owner of the company proposing reuse of the Vermont Yankee site for battery storage has said he wants input from the public, so that use may be gaining traction.
If these batteries are for electric vehicles, they are highly toxic, and we have no technology to recycle them, much like the nuclear waste at the site.
I'm tired of this piece of land, so close to a major population center, being used as a toxic waste dump. Over the years these batteries will probably develop leaks, poisoning the ground and possibly the water table.
The idea of a data center there is just as unpalatable.
Would you please get us some information about what is going on there so we don't end up with a really bad solution with no time to change the outcome?
