Madcap film retelling of ‘The Emperor’s New Clothes’ to premiere online Oct. 15

BRATTLEBORO-The Vermont Suitcase Company theater group will release its feature film New Clothes for free on YouTube at an online premiere event Thursday, Oct. 15, at 7:30 p.m.

New Clothes, a film adaptation of Hans Christian Andersen’s short story “The Emperor’s New Clothes,” follows “twin button peddlers as they try to swindle the emperor out of his money (and his clothes) by posing as famous fashion designers,” organizers said in a news release.

The madcap plot entails a host of Machiavellian plotters, including rivaling medieval-style fashion influencers.

“The only person looking out for the emperor’s best interests seems to be his manservant Hamelin,” the release said, adding that Hamelin is frequently sidetracked “as he tries to train his country cousin Pia in the domestic arts.”

The theater company has screened New Clothes throughout southern Vermont and at the Monadnock International Film Festival in Keene but wanted to share the film more broadly.

The troupe “ended up settling on YouTube because it’ll be easy to find, easy to watch, and free, which is how we try to make our theater,” said Wyndham Maxwell, a New Clothes co-writer and co-director who also plays the role of Gerard in the film.

A film trailer and event information are available at vermontsuitcasecompany.com.
