Feeling lonely in a crowd? Talk about books about art at BMAC

BRATTLEBORO-The Brattleboro Museum & Art Center (BMAC) at 10 Vernon St. will host a group discussion of the novel Lonely Crowds, by Stephanie Wambugu, Thursday, Oct. 22, at 5:30 p.m.

Lonely Crowds, which appeared on Vulture’s and New York Magazine’s best-of lists for 2025, follows an intense friendship between two young women who meet as the only scholarship students at a Catholic girls’ school.

As Ruth and Maria later attempt to succeed in the New York art world, the novel “explores the ways ambition and artistic communities can bring people together while also creating competition, isolation, and uncertainty about where we belong,” organizers said in a news release.

The event is part of BMAC Reads, a series of conversations about books about art. Elizabeth Catlin, a Brattleboro Literary Festival board member, will moderate the conversation.

Refreshments will be available, and participants will have an opportunity to view the museum’s current exhibits.

Registration is recommended. Admission is $10 (free for BMAC members). To register, visit brattleboromuseum.org or call 802-257-0124, Ext. 101.
